Is this too good to be true?

We got a notice in the mail saying they could reduce our mortgage interest with a 30 yr fixed FHA loan (we currently have an FHA). My DH called and they said that there is no appraisal or closing costs. There is absolutely no cost to us and the government gives them the money for the closing costs. DH says it's a government program that was put in place to help everyone out, but because I've not paid attention to all that I wasn't aware of this. They sent an email of everything they need and a couple things they need is a copy of our drivers' licenses and social security cards. WTH? Why do they need that? I'm leary of this, but DH seems to think it's legit. I've tried looking up the company on the BBB website, but they have no records of the company which makes me even more nervous. WDYT?

  • Out of all of the mortgages I've had (a big whopping 2!) I have never ever had to produce my SS card. Ekk- sounds fishy but I am super leary.

  • That's what I said... "What do they need the card for?" The number I can see, but the actually card?! Scary!

  • My cousin works in mortgages at a credit union. She said when we get those notices in the mail, trash them. I wouldn't trust it.

Have you tried just googling the company (not just with the BBB)?

  • I would not trust this without further investigation. Sounds a little shady. They should at least have website or something for you to find out more info first. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is!

I have and there are myspace pages for it or something that will let you "request a deal" from them. No real info on it. I personally think it's a scam and want to call the guy we did our original mortgage and our previous refi with before we continue anything else. I talked to DH about it this evening and he's okay with that... I just have a bad feeling.

We are refi-ing with BofA with no cost to us and we have to give them a copy of our SS card.

    That screams scam to me.

At the very least, it doesn't sound very reputable.

  • Myspace pages? No way would I deal with them.

can you post the name of the company? Or pm me?

  • SCL Mortgage Inc is what the mail says, but on the email DH got from this lady is from "____ at ratereductioncenter dot org." I tried looking up that dot org site and nothing comes up.

  • DONT DO IT! My dh is a police officer and does real estate on the side. He said its a scam. Mortgage companies are required to be listed in order to be reputable. Also--never give your Ss or drivers license info over email. The company needs to provide you with written documentation requesting info. Emails dont cut it! Good luck, but this sounds like a scam.
  • Has your husband given them any information at all?

Thanks everyone. I think if DH really wants to refinance we'll call the guy we have previously worked with.
