Where is your u/s?

Everyone talks about getting their u/s at their doctor's appt, does your OB have an u/s machine or do you have to go to a hospital? I thought OBGYNs had u/s machines, but mine doesn't and I have to get a script, make a separate appt, and go across town to get an u/s. Is that typical?

Re: Where is your u/s?

  • My doctor's office is at the hospital, so we go right across the hall to the ultrasound department. My doctor also has a portable ultrasound machine that she used on me at 9 weeks.

  • My RE had one in his office.  My OB is affiliated with one hospital, but prefers to send me to a guy at a different hospital for my ultrasounds.  Thankfully they are close to each other.

  • No, my doctor doesn't have an ultrasound machine.  I have to go to a special imaging center to get my ultrasounds done (they do ultrasounds, x-rays, cat-scans, etc. there).  It's a PITA because they are in two different spots about 20 minutes from each other.

  • I think it just depends on the office. I believe my office used to send you somewhere else because I remember when I was about 15 I had to go to a radiology place for ovarian cysts. Since they moved to a new location, they do them in the office now.

  • I had my dating u/s done as a separate appointment at the main hospital, but my OB office also has a portable u/s. They never used it with me though. My OB was able to pick up the hb at 9w4d, but he said if he couldn't find it he was going to run and grab the portable us.

  • I have to go to a separate location for ultrasounds, however, the upside is that I get to schedule the appointment too.  So I can choose sooner rather than later!  When I was pregnant with my first, the ob office had an ultrasound machine but it was reserved for "emergencies" only, and honestly, they didn't even know how to use it--I found this out the hard way when I was having episodes of bleeding.
  • My RE has an u/s in office, as does my OB.
  • Another reason for me not to love my OB. Confused

  • The doc's office is part of the hospital annex so the u/s is in the office.  I know the other ob in town does not have one and you have to go to the hosptial.

  • My OB has a machine in his office.

  • I've only had one u/s so far, but it was a portable machine that was right in the room with me at my OB's office.

  • I think it's pretty normal that you get sent somewhere else for u/s.  Most people I know have.

The clinic I go to has their own.  Part of the reason I love it is because they have seperate u/s rooms, and  all of the machines are hooked up to flat screen moniters that hang on the walls.  It is awesome to be able to lay back, relax and see the baby perfectly clear in front of you.

  • My OB is located within a large facility that has their own internal u/s machine. I believe that the external u/s are done in the radiology department that is located within the same building. I guess it just varies with each doctor. Sucks that you have to go so far just for your u/s though.
