talk to me about thrush

I think that DD has it.  She has what look like little white sores all around the inside of her lips.  Poor pumpkin has been more irritable and cries sometimes while nursing.

Do I need to take her to the pedi?  Everything I've read indicates that it works itself out.  Is there anything I can do to make things more comfy for her?  Can I use baby Oragel?  DD#1 didn't have it so I'm clueless about it.

Thanks!!!

Re: talk to me about thrush

  • sorry to hear about that, i was lucky to not experience that either time while nursing.

if it is thrush, it's SUPER contagious!  my niece had thrush, but she was bottle fed.  they had to completely sterilize everything that came and went out of her mouth.  i also have a friend who was nursing and her baby boy got thursh, she also got it on her nipples and said it was seriously painful.

i'd go to the pedi just to make sure.  that way maybe you can skip getting it. also, i forgot to look to see how old your dd is, but if she's old enough, may want to give her some yogurt.

She's only 6 weeks, so far too young for anything but breast milk.  I'll be in the pedi's office tomorrow, I'll ask then.

  • I'm sorry, thrush is not fun.  Your pedi will prescribe Nystatin for baby and you.  She will get nasty banana flavored syrupy stuff in her mouth 3-4 times a day for 2 weeks and you will get a cream for your nipples and baby's bum.  You can also use an OTC antifungal cream on nipples and bum (that's what I did) just remember to wipe it off before you feed.

It took the entire 2 weeks+ for it to clear up for us, but I wasn't as diligent with the Nystatin as I should have been.  It upset Cooper's tummy and made him barf, a lot.  Needless to say I didn't like giving it to him.  I also gave him acidophilus, I would just break open a capsule, dip my damp finger in the powder and wipe a little of it inside his cheeks.

My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

Same thing. Also, I prepared a solution of white vinergar and water (1 part vinegar: 3 parts water) to wipe off my nipples after each feeding. I also  washed everything (bottles, nipples, caps, etc. ) with soapy water + vinegar before sterilization.

Plus, if you're pumping you should not freeze milk now for future use. If you freeze milk that's contaminated with candida and feed it to your baby in a couple of months your baby may get thrush again.

  • :( so sorry to hear this! Thrush is NOT fun.

You could try Gentian Violet or Grapefruit Seed Extract and sun bathing your nipples. :) sounds silly, but candida hates Vit D and UV rays. :)

The key is to treat both your nipples and babies mouth at the same time. You can take Grapefruit Seed Extract by mouth (you) and then treat your babes mouth and your nipples with Gentian Violet once a day for 4 days... it should clear up.

And really, truly, sunbathing your breasts really does help.
