Weight Question

I am going to ask the Dr. tomorrow but I want your opinion / hear your experiences. I have a BMI of 27.4 (25-29 is overweight). Pregnancy is no time to loose weight and I intend to gain the 20-25lb.

But the amount of fat I have in my body stored is high. I had a big talk with my husband yesterday (who is overweight also) and we decided to change our diet to more fruits and veggies, do prenatal yoga (at home) together and play more Wii. I am very dizzy, tired and weak with this pregnancy, but I saw what my laziness did to me with the last - so this time I want to eat healthy and exercise.

Any experience of how to loose fat, gain muscle and eat healthy when nauseous and always hungry?

Background: Since I am married and had my first child I gained about 30lb. This is a big issue, but honestly I did not have time for going to the gym (I work full time and then learn Hebrew at night).

Re: Weight Question

  • Have you considered some weight training?  I was doing a boot camp to try to lose baby weight from my first baby, when I got pregnant again.  I'm still going (with permission from my doctor).   I don't expect it to help me lose weight right now (although I suddenly dropped 6 pounds right before I found out about being pg), but I know that if I have more muscle, I'll burn calories more efficiently after I have the baby.

Wii is not a workout- they are games. The only thing they provide is getting you off your ass instead of pushing buttons on a couch (and if you are good, you can still sit and play 90% of the games).

there are actually many wii fit and wii active games that are a great starting point.  they show you proper technique and help you start getting active.  congrats, OP, for knowing this is a time to be healthy!  definitely pick up some hand weights and start taking some family walks.  eating healthy while also having m/s isn't easy but the m/s will pass and will allow you to stick to your healthy eating plan.  also, talk to your doc - my doc says that if your BMI puts you into the overweight category, then you should really only gain 15-20 in a pregnancy.

  • tthanks for the English lesson. English is my 4th language so I am bound to make mistakes.

We have Wii Fit and after the Yoga workout I can barely walk the next day... so its a mix of me being in bad shape and Wii Fit being a workout. :)

  • I'm in a similar situation. I'm actually taking a real vacation this year to a resort, and have to wear a swimsuit. After years of not exercising, I decided I wanted to get in shape and lose some weight.  We'd been trying to get pregnant for a year, so I wasn't expecting this in the middle of trying to lose weight.

I think as long as you set realistic, healthy goals, you'll be fine. Eating healthy, vitamin rich foods instead of eating junk will help you feel better and be better for the baby.  I've been trying to get back into running, which is faster than going to the gym because the car ride isn't required, just head out the front door. Now that I'm pregnant I'm just making extra sure to stay hydrated and slowing down when I'm tired instead of trying to push through.

I'm not really sure if this was helpful. Good luck and don't get disheartened, you sound like you've got a full plate already.

  • Kdodge -- if you're going to give people crap instead of offering good advice, don't bother posting here.  No one wants you to talk down to them... she was looking for real advice and encouragement. Geez!
  • I don't buy into the idea that pregnancy is not a good time to get in shape.  What better time?  I talked with my doctor about it, and he's very supportive of me continuing my fitness goals throughout pregnancy.  Sure, you don't want to cut calories too dramatically during pregnancy in order to 'lose weight'...but if you are eating clean, whole foods and are regular about strength training and cardio, you can take advantage of your body's jump in metabolism and come out in better shape than you went in. Body composition is more important than weight at this point -- with  both of my first two pregnancies, I hardly gained at all -- I gained 12 with my first, and about 17 with my second... and most of that was gone after the standard 6 weeks... but I looked TERRIBLE even after the weight was gone...because I had been lazy the whole pregnancy and ate whatever I wanted.  It did baaaad things to my body composition.

Check out this blog -- it really inspired me to make this pregnancy a fit one:  https://cassandraforsythe.blogspot.com

Also, I'm a member on Livestrong.com, and I started a group for women who want to maintain or even increase their fitness level during pregnancy, where we can share experience, articles, doc advice, etc...

    https://www.livestrong.com/groups/group/pregnant-and-powerful/

Check it out, it doesn't have too many members yet but I'm hoping more will join, and then you can ask questions and share experiences without killjoys who are obviously miserable telling you how to spell and mocking your fitness choices like Wii.  :-)  (which can get you pretty active if you put your all into it, so you keep it up girl!)

  • I think changing your diet and doing some moderate workouts would be great, and about as far as you should take it, for now. Some women are in the best shape of their lives after they have kids, so don't be discouraged. You have all the time in the world to get super fit after the baby comes.

I'm sure eating better (small meals, every couple hours) will help you shed the pounds, and get you ready for an achievable lifestyle change.

Kdodge- You sound like an incredibly angry, negative person. I never understand how it is possible that some people wake up on the wrong side of the bed every single day.

I'm hoping that you are a walking dictionary with an exceptional figure and ability to "get off your ass" often enough to tell other people how to live their lives....otherwise I wouldn't be acting like such a monitor of other women around here.

  • Definitely check with your doctor before starting any new fitness routines. If you were already really active when you got pregnant you will be fine to continue, but be cautious with jumping into a more intense fitness routine now.

It may be difficult to start eating healthy now (if you weren't before) if you have m/s, but adding more fruits and vegetables is definitely a good start.  I track everything I eat through the daily plate on livestrong.com. That way I know what I am eating and it keeps my calories in check.  Try to eat healthy snacks like nuts, greek yogurt, fruits and veggies. They will give you more energy than sweets and junk food and help you to feel better.

  • PS, here are a few meals/snacks that are working great for me, and have been keeping the MS away.

bananas, granola bars, yogurt with fruit mixed in, almonds, raisins, Wheat Thins baked crackers, sliced apples & cheese, carrots & hummus, light summery salads with chicken and fruits, rice, steamed veggies, granola.

I try to eat every two hours so there's usually not a distinction between any of my meals, except dinner. I eat snacky-type food all day and then cook a meal at night.

My motto on eating has always been to eat clean. I try to stay away from packaged foods, and cook from scratch as often as possible. It will really help with the weight gain. Good luck!

  • With my first (and probably with this one) I had gestational diabetes and I had to eat 3 meals and 3 snacks a day, and always eat protein with my carbs and limit my carbs. (it's actually still a good amount of carbs, just broken up evenly throughout the day and always eaten with a protein.)

I ended up weighing less after giving birth than before I got pregnant.  I have since gained 30lbs and am at the heaviest I've ever been and I have sworn to myself and to my husband that I am taking advantage of this pregnancy and I'm going to use it to get myself back in shape.  Along with the gestational diabetes diet (assuming I have it again), I plan to go to prenatal exercise classes and/or water aerobics. AND most importantly stick to healthy eating and exercise afterwards. I do not plan to lose any weight, I did not lose weight with my first, must have just lost fat, and hope that I will have the same results.

Just talk with your doctor and get the approval and recommendations from them.  If you were not exercising before getting pregnant you will probably have to start out very mild, so that you don't stress your body.

  • OK I might start to sound like an spokes person here but I can assure you I am not.  Before I was pregnant and we were TTC I was overweight (also around a 28 BMI) not only was I a little overweight but I also was insulin resistant (which leads to diabetes).  I couldn't get pregnant and I was getting frustrated, my doctor told me that if I lost about 15lbs (I was 160lbs and 5 feet 2 inches), I would probably get pregnant and so I started the South Beach Diet.  I lost 25lbs in 2 months and was pregnant by the 3rd month after over a year of trying (and my insulin problem went away completely)!  That being said the doctor told me that I could continue eating the South Beach Diet way though out my entire pregnancy and that it was in fact the ideal pregnant way of eating.  After, I found out I was pregnant I continued to lose weight until about week 7, now I am holding steady at about 135lbs.  The Doctor said that if I stay on this eating regimen I will most likely just gain the amount of weight I am supposed to gain and I will also lose the weight really easily after the baby is born.

I have to also mention that I did all of this with JUST the diet.  I NEVER exercised at all (which I should have done), now I take a walk almost every night after I got my BFP.

I also have to say that the first phase of the South Beach Diet is unhealthy for pregnant ladies.  You would have to start with phase 2 (if you pick up the South Beach Diet book you can read about the phases).  Phase 1 is just too restrictive and you won't be getting the nutrients you need.  I cheat also, if I'm craving something sweet or maybe some french fries and I know that I will go mad if I don't have ice cream or a cookie, I have some but only a small amount and them and I'm satisfied.  Like today I REALLY REALLY wanted a Frosty from Wendy's and I went and got a child size one and was totally happy.  I mean come on you cant deprive a pregnant woman of her cravings!

My husband also did the South Beach Diet with me and he is still doing it, right now he is down almost 30lbs!  And my Dad also started when I did and he was over 200lbs and now is in the 180s!!!!  My husband exercises with a personal trainer 3 times a week but my Dad does NO exercise at all!

Sorry this is so long but it is the only thing that has ever worked for me and I have become quite passionate about it! I mean it got me pregnant after all! (:

It's lose. As in you lose your virginity but your vagina is loose.

The only way to gain muscle is through weight training. If you can't make it to a gym, pick up some weights for your home and many pregnancy books/magazines have examples of lifts you can do.

  • I am overweight too and was with my first.  I agree with not going on a diet to try to LOOSE Wink weight while pregnant but it is a good idea to start eating healthier and getting more active.  I did this with my first.  Also, don't be afraid to NOT gain the 20-25 lbs.  I only gained about 11 lbs with my first and ended up weighing less after birth and she's a very healthy toddler Big Smile  Good luck moving towards a healthier lifestyle...I've recently lost 33 lbs and it's not easy but it is well worth it!!!
  • KDodge- Did I mention size? It sounds like you're insecure about something. The day before I found out I was pregnant, I had just gone on a 3 day hiking trip. Two days before my BFP I climbed 5,000 feet to the tallest mountain in the Rocky Mountain Range in 4 hours. I cycle 5 days a week for almost an hour and pracitce yoga 3 times a week. I still do this, while I'm pregnant.

Yes, I understand fitness.  Thanks for asking.

  • just a thought, if you are obese, you shouldn't gain 20-25 pounds. I was told that the maximum i should gain is 15 but i could go without gaining a pound and that would be fine

  • I gotta stick up for the Wii, I lost about 20 lbs before my wedding using the wii and dieting. I found that the wii fit helped with the first 5-10 lbs, but some of the other games help get past that plateau. I loved the gold's gym kick boxing, I lost most of my weight with that game.

  • Hey!  How funny I also moved from Southern Ca. (Riverside) a year ago.  Fun to meet someone with the same due-date...also, this baby's due date is the exact same due date I had for DS...though he was born April 30th instead.   I just added you to my friends. :-)
