School-Aged Children

what type of after school activities do you have your DC in?

I've just enrolled DS in swimming lessons ( b/c he's terrified of water) for the Fall 2 nights per week.  We are also looking at a gymnastics class for him on the weekends.  The one I've found is $195 for 1 hour per week, for 12 weeks.  Does that sound to expensive to anyone for a 4 yr old gymnastics class??

  • We will have to see what the "backpack express" brings home about possible activities.

DD loves Mad Science, but hasn't done it for a few years.  She plays violin and is a safety patrol.  Both kids take swimming lessons in the winter.  No activities for DS until I know how his adjustment to kindergarten is going.  We'll have to see what comes up.  He has expressed interest in t-ball/baseball, so he may do that in the spring.

  • Last year I had my 6 year old in soccer in the Spring. He really enjoyed it. This year he wants to try basketball I think.

To answer your question, yes that's expensive IMO. That's $16.25 an hour!

  • My DD will have ballet one night a week after school and winter swim lessons beginning in Jan.
  • My daughter dances once a week and has Girl Scouts(Brownies troop) twice a month.  Then both of my kids have swim lessons once a week.

DS wants to join the Building Club this year (Legos).  It's $75 for 1x/week for 6 weeks.  It's "structured play with Lego bricks" where kids are supposed to learn communication skills and teamwork, "think outside the box" when solving problems and mastering building challenges, and be encouraged to expand their creative horizons.

He's also interested in Running Club this year.  That one is free..thank goodness!

ETA: X-nay on the uilding-say.  Just went to sign him up (we got paid today) and the course is closed.  I feel terrible for him.

We have this at our school. It's actually a team and there are competitions and stuff. It looks so fun! But my DD won't do it :(

We have dance 2 nights a week, tumbling 1 night, and then she will start religious education 1 night (on the same night she had church choir last year so it's not too much more).

  • DS goes to TaeKwonDo 5x a week. He's been going for 4 years now and recently got his black belt. He takes class 3x a week and teaches the little kids 2x a week. It's been $85 a week since we started and I know it's gone up since then, but his master has been nice enough not to raise the rates on us.
  • My daughter is in Sea Cadets and through that, she is on the Drill with Arms Team, Biathlon Team and Seamanship Team.  So, all in all, she has Cadet stuff 3 times a week.
  • DD#1--Swimming lessons (1x a week), Tennis (2x a week), track team (2x a week plus meets on weekends), dance (1x a week possibly), violin (1x a week)

    DD#2--Swimming lessons (1x a week), dance (1x a week), violin (1x a week).

We've done t-ball, soccer in the past but won't this fall.  Yes, I do a lot of activities w/ them...but I figure since I'm a SAH might as well take advantage.

  • DD is takes ballet, jazz and tap.  She loves it!
  • SD#2 and SD#3 are in two gymnastics classes this session (8 weeks). It is one hour class and one hour and a half class per week. It cost $235.00 per kid. Gymnastics is just expensive!

SS plays most sports (winter) basketball, (spring) baseball, (summer) flag football, and (fall) baseball.
