DH & I are flying to NY (2.5 hr flight) for Labor Day weekend w/ DD. I have never traveled with an infant so I am a little nervous but I'm more nervous about not being prepared. I will obviously take the necessities like milk, diapers, wipes, toys etc. but I was wondering what else we really need. Can we take her stoller and carseat to the gate? We plan on having her on our laps for the flight so we didn't purchase an extra seat. I don't care if we forget stuff for ourselves but I'd really like to have everything we need for DD. I want her to be as comfortable at ther airport and my mom's house as she would be at our home. If you've taken a vacation with your LO what did you take w/ you for your trip? TIA!
Re: Flying w/ a 4 month old....
you can gate check a stroller and car seat and it doesn't count toward your carry on allowance.
I've done that, but for me, it was easier to wear her (I use a baby hawk) and check the stroller and carseat (for free) with the luggage.
I've done it by myself 3 times (including right when she turned 4 months). I took, in my diaper bag:
a paci
diapers (
wipes
a blanket (for BFing and if she got cold)
an extra outfit
sophie
a bottle of BM JIC (i was in a middle seat once and BFing would have been hard)
If you FF, bring more than you think you'll need because there might be delays. Also bring more diapers than you think you'll need.
Overall, it was easy. DD slept most of the time on each flight.
Yeah we flew with DD at the exact same age. We took our stroller and car seat and checked it at the gate. It does not count towards actual baggage and does not count as a carry on. It was really nice to have her in it in the airport. Also if you bottle feed just take them out before they go through the security machine because it can affect the milk/water.
Also take something familiar from her crib, if she sleeps in a crib at home, like the sheet and put it over her bed at your mom's that could help her sleep better.
just an fyi if you are a baby wearer... for some reason the FAA does not allow anything that ties your baby to you during take off or landing.
i flew when lo was 3mo & they made me take my sleeping baby out of the moby for take off. i was SO mad. however, on the trip home they didn't say anything to us... i just left him in.
just something to be aware of. good luck!
