I think you can get AI even with fast swimmers. But generally I think it depends on how many are slow and also on their form (morphology?). If they just need a little boost, then IUI. If they need more than that...choosing the best ones and ICSI (injected straight into the egg) for IVF. I'm still new at this but it is amazing how much you learn in just a few months! Good luck!

About me: A pixie in the city, 41, TTC #1 since May 2010, married 18 years.
Diagnosed with, surgically removed, endometrioma Aug.2010 Sept 2010 IUI #1=BFN, Oct=cyst/bfn, Nov 2010 IUI #2 = bfn. Had to postpone IUI #3 b/c of a cyst natural=BFN. Skipped IUI #3, decided to go for IVF. Found/removed uterine polyps Jan 2011. IVF cancelled, no follicles. IVF #2: 3 great embies put in on Easter Sunday = BFN. Hoping for another chance at IVF in July. TTC is NOT for wimps.

The hubs gets his checked because of all the IUIs we're doing....same as jcath -- sometimes they are good, sometimes slow; but a second SA couldn't hurt. GL!
There could also be factors that cause them to be slow. If he's not feeling well, if you've refrained from sex longer than 5 days, to name a few.
I think your Dr probably factor everything: morphology (the size/shape/appearance), motility(movement), concentration of them (how many). My husband motility was a little low but nothing that concerned my Dr (we also hadn't had sex in longer than 5 days).
Just like our FSH can change so can their SA.
Good luck, I hope you get good news!
ETA: Did you get the results or are you expecting slow swimmers?

Since we're doing IUIs DH gets his swimmers checked alot - sometimes his are slow and sometimes they are perfect. Could be worth a second SA.
