Breastfeeding

Thrush or something else?

I have a really intense burning in both breast all the time.  Before, after, during feeding.  I woke up with it this morning.  My DD doesn't seem to be having any trouble/pain while nursing.  She has a small white spot in her mouth I can see when she cries but I haven't tried to see if it wipes off or not.  I searched the boards to see if I could find any answers supplied in the past and googled it but I'm not having much luck determining if that is it or not.  Because it's the weekend I can't call the dr so I'm hoping you ladies can provide some insight.

 TIA!

Re: Thrush or something else?

  • Is the pain in just the nipple, or is it the whole breast?  Thrush will kinda feel like glass grinding down into JUST the nipple, very sharp and needle-like.
  • Loading the player...
  • Whole breast.  Almost like liquid fire running through them.  And my nipples don't hurt for the first 15 minutes or so, and when they do start I think it is just because she is getting lazy and it is a bad latch.  But the burning is all the time.
  • Sounds closer to the descriptions I've heard of mastitis.  Are they red at all?
  • No, and no other symptoms.  No fever, chills, etc.  Could this maybe be coming?
  • When I had thrush, I had zapping, shooting pain in my breasts. My nipples were itchy and burned. When I had mastitis, I caught it early and never developed flu like symptoms. I called my ob as soon as my breast turned red and the pain was worse than a regular clogged duct. I'd definitely get checked out to get a proper diagnosis and treatment. Doesn't your dr have an after hours/weekend number? In the meantime, www.kellymom.com has info about thrush, clogged ducts, mastitis and home treatment (and lots of other great bf'ing info). I hope you feel better soon!

  • I would call the Dr. as far as the white spot - if it's on the roof of her mouth, it's normal - it's called 'epstein pearls'. they go away after a few weeks. thrush presents as more white spots or coating everywhere in the mouth. hth!
