School-Aged Children

K5 vent

My oldest started Kindergarten on Tuesday. 1st day pick up, she was waiting by the buses when I filled out the form and told the teacher she was walking with me. Day 2 her sticker that has her name on it is misspelled and says 'Lois" instead of 'Lori'. When I notice and laugh with my daughter she says "I know she calls me Lois".

She goes to the after school program and so they think her name is Lois b/c that is what her sticker says. When I ask her what her snack was she says she gave it to the teacher to help her open it and then the teacher gave it to someone else.

So yesterday I check her name tag sticker (which is made up everyday) and it still says Lois so then I open her bookbag to write a note to the teacher and realize the teacher put the wrong child's folder in my child's bag. UGH

I think mistakes are common but is this a bit much? I am kind of annoyed by all the mistakes, especially my child being called the wrong name.

Re: K5 vent

  • I'm a K teacher and I always make sure that I know each child's name and label things appropriately for exactly the reasons you mentioned.  Kindergarten is hectic, especially at the beginning of the year, but in my mind the kids are depending on me and I need to make an effort to get things right.  I would definitely write to the teacher or stop by to speak with her about what is going on.

Honestly, the school could have Lori's name written wrong on a document or in their computer system and that could be why the teacher is getting things mixed up.  I always cross reference all the forms to see if there are any discrepancies and, if there are, I go into their permanent file and look at their birth certificate so that I know their actual name.

  • I will talk to her on Monday when I drop her off. The teacher calls her the right name but b/c her sticker is wrong other teachers who don't know her and the after school care teacher calls her the wrong name.

    BTW love this new board

  • That is annoying. I'd send a note (or email, which ever way you prefer to contact the teacher) and remind her that your daughter's name is not Lois.

Also, I'd assume that the teacher is having difficulty keeping the folder's straight or that the kids are mixing them up. My son never came home with someone else's folder but he did come home with his buddy's work before. It happens.

I'd also mention the snack problem to the teacher as well.

    GL!
