Toddlers: 24 Months+

Do you give your 2 yr old candy?

My MIL keeps giving DD candy like pez & sweet tarts and gummie snacks even though we told her not to. The pedi told us to avoid hard candy still due to choking hazards and that they didn't recommend gummie snacks because they stick to the teeth and it's hard to brush their teeth well enough.

Re: Do you give your 2 yr old candy?

  • Nope, none.

Well the only thing he has had is part of a Kit-Kat bar, because that is the one thing he was able to eat out of the Halloween candy he got last year.

I don't plan on letting him have hard candy anytime soon.

ETA: If they want to give her a sweet little treat, there are tons of other options besides candy. That is probably what I would tell them too, because that so sounds like something my Dad would try to do.

ETA again: It looks like this thread took a different spin after I was here earlier. I'm not saying he doesn't get treats. He has popsicles frequently and cake/cookies/ice cream occasionally. I was just referring to what I consider candy, and definitely no hard candy or suckers.

  • Yes, DD gets gummie bears and fruit snacks.  Those are her treats for going potty.  She also has a gummie vitamin.

  • Sure, once in awhile he has M&Ms or a lollipop.
  • DD hadn't had any candy up until 2 weeks ago when we started bribing her to poop on the potty with Skittles. She gets 1 Skittle only per poop...so I figure it won't kill her!

  • Yes my son gets a sucker every now and then and gummies.  I just make sure that I have a close eye on him with the sucker and try not to give him gummies to late in the day.
  • We do as an occasional special treat - chocolate, gummies, stuff like that. I am of the "well, a couple of MandM's aren't any worse for her than a donut or ice cream so I don't really care what form the HFCS comes in" camp.

I would be concerned, though, if someone was giving DD types of candy or other foods I didn't feel comfortable with her having because I felt they were a choking hazard. To me that's a more pressing concern than the candy in and of itself.

  • no, her treats are a cookie or popsicle. don't want her getting addicted to candy already.  Now I won't say never  because I am pretty sure I remember buying myself a peanut butter cup and she wanted a bite, but not hard candy for sure.

hehe, so what's that pic in your siggy?! Wink

  • Thanks.  DH and I both agree that she is a bit too young for hard candy.  We don't plan on keeping it from her forever, but we just feel like there is plenty of time for candy.  My MIL makes it seem like we're depriving DD or something.
  • M&Ms at the supermarket. DD knows if she's well behaved the entire shopping trip she can have M&Ms at the check out counter.
  • at 2, no DS did not get candy like that.  he did eat some chocolate, like pieces of chocolate bars, and easter bunny chocolate bunnies.  but no hard candies until about 2.5.
  • Never.

We are very strict with what DS eats. Even getting a homemade cookie or ice cream is a rare treat. My family thinks that I am nuts and they will try and sneak him stuff. I try not to get worked up about a few treats (cookies, ice cream, etc) here and there, but he never gets candy. To me he is still a baby and a baby doesnt need junk.

  • Candy- no.  He got some at a 4 year old's b'day party and I let him have one sour patch kid (knew he'd hate it!) and threw away the rest.  He does have ice cream sometimes and he loves fruit juice popsicles.  Also, he has Gerber Graduates fruit juice gummies sometimes.  I almost lost it on DH when he gave DS chocolate milk.  Thankfully he hated it!
  • I occasionally give her an organic Yummy Earth sucker. I'm not above bribing my kid when we go grocery shopping if she's throwing a fit. Considering we don't own a car and have to go out and get groceries quite a bit, it's no surprise that she gets fed up with it every once and a while.

ETA: And I don't feel bad about it. She eats a well balanced, varied diet and doesn't beg for treats, so I think I'm doing just fine.

  • DS can have fruit snacks...I don't consider that to be "candy."

On rare occassions, he might get some M&Ms or a lollipop, but those instances are few and far between.  However, he does get a cookie or popsicle as a treat.

  • Sure we do. No hard candy though. But things like smarties and marshmallows, cookies, cake, chocolate. He's a pretty good eater though and he lets me not only brush his teeth for two minutes twice a day but floss them too!

In fact, just today he ate M&M's while he got his hair cut.

  • My DD gets a jelly bean for using the potty. At her school they give her a sucker at the end of the week if she uses the potty 50% of the time for the week. I do give her fruit snacks in her lunch once in a while. She loves to get her teeth brushed most of the time and our ped said that we should feel her whatever she will eat since she doesn't eat much. I do try to not fill her up on empty calories.

  • He gets m&m's occasionally as a reward.  He has also had an occasional sucker but they are so freakin messy that I really tried to avoid them.  My mom is also bad about giving him Pez and stuff without even considering the choking hazard.  Usually when I remind her that the kid still inhales his food rather than chewing properly, she'll back off.  Oh, another treat is marshmellows.  He loves those and I don't feel like they are quite as bad as some of the others.  Our biggest problem right now is chocolate milk.  My mother gave it to him and he is completely obsessed!  First thing in the morning is "chockett?"  I try to trick him with that YoBaby drink stuff and just pretend to put in the chocolate syrup.  It usually works but sometimes he'll bust me!

  • Olivia gets an M&M for going to the potty. She will get her goldfish or some Teddy grahams. She doesn't like gummies lol She doesn't like juice either so the m&m's don't make me feel guilty

  • Not daily....but he does get candy for treats.  Based on all the responses, I feel as though I must be a terrible mom.  We went to the store the other day and he got a lolly pop.  He gets m&m's for potty training and I do give him fruit snacks a few times a week.  As long as he knows its a treat and not a normal everyday food...I'm fine with it.
