Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If your LO wasn't talking at 12 months

when did they start saying words? My LO just says Mama, dada, and other random babbles. My husband is getting a little worried that he's not saying any real words yet. It doesn't help that we have two other neighbor boys within 7 weeks of our LO that are both saying words.  Were you worried at all that your LO didn't say any words at 12 months?

  • DS still only says "up" "uh oh" and "dada". Not even a "mama" out of him. No worries at this point. From what I understand they don't they concerned until 18 or 24 months. DS does see a speech pathologist, but that only started a month or so ago. They said babbling is great.

  • Wondering too...we don't even get mama and dada yet.  TONS of babbles, and what we think is mama and dada, but if I point to one of us and ask who we are, he doesn't say it.  He knows who we are, who Lucy (the dog) is, can do  "so big", high-five, etc, when we say that stuff to him but he doesn't say real words yet.  He understands us, just not repeating us or talking on his own.

  • Try not to worry about it yet. DS didn't say much at that age either. I worried about it and it was all for no reason. DS has several words now.

    It'll come.

  • Addy says "mama" "dada" "elmo" "hi" "bye" "uh oh" and some other random things ... but she doesn't consistently say anything really. She still babbles a lot. I'm not too worried honestly.

  • LO babbles and doesn't say anything really clearly.  She makes sounds for yes and no, but not the actual words.  She also says dadadadadadada which DH seems to think is just for him :)  We're not worried.  She understands a ton and the talking will come.
  • You shouldn't have any concerns yet! If you ask a speech therapist they say if they aren't talking by at all by 18 months than you should start to worry! They should have between 20 and 50 words by 18 months!

  • My boys didn't talk at all until almost 15m, and by 18m they were ahead. I wouldn't worry yet.

  • About a week ago, I was starting to get worried.  DD could repeat quite a few words, but didn't use any of them functionally (except "dada," of course).  This past week DH and I and daycare have been really prompting her to "use [her] words" whenever she grunted or whined to communicate.  Lo and behold, she's starting to talk!  I wouldn't worry yet.  It definitely comes in spurts!

  • my 13 month old hardly says any words except numnum (food) and ccaaahhh (cash, the dog). Our reasoning is that we are bilingual family and he hears portugese and english all day so it will take him longer to pick up words, pedi said not to worry about it. if by 3 they are not speaking then worry.
  • No words here for either kid. DD says some things I think are attempts at words but not 100% yet. They say dada sometimes in reference to MH and sometimes not so I'm not even too sure about that. Not worried yet, there are no other things that are delayed or anything that would make me concerned. Plus they both walk and I have heard that often kids will focus on one or the other (verbal/motor) at a time, not sure how true it is but it makes sense to me.
  • DD just babbles and the pedi wasn't concerned at her 12 month appt. DH of course thinks she's calling for him when she says dadadada. ;)

  • The only word DD says consistently is Bubba (our cat). Every once in a while we'll get a ba-ba (bottle) & for like one day she was saying da-da. Other than that, just a whole lot of babbling, squealing, etc. Oh & her saying Bubba is new, she just started it maybe 2 weeks ago. It's so funny though because we have 2 cats & she calls them both Bubba, as well as anything else. She was calling DH Bubba this morning, LOL!

I wouldn't worry though, like pp said if LO goes to 18 months & still isn't saying anything, then I'd bring it up to the pedi.
