Trying to Get Pregnant

How did you get yourself into the "temping" habit?

I'd like to start temping so I can obviously have a better idea of when I'm ovulating but, I'm discovering it's brutal to remember to take my temp before I get out of bed.

Some mornings I just reach over, grab my BBT and take my temp, others I just pop out of bed, turn off my alarm, go to the bathroom and then think "Damn, I forgot to take my temperature."

I know it's just going to take time to make it part of my morning routine, but did anyone find a way to make that easier? To remind themselves?

I actually don't have an alarm clock at my bedside; I use the alarm on my cell phone, which adds another twist--the cell phone's on the other side of the room and I have to get out of bed to turn it off. I have to put it there and force myself to get out of bed or I'll hit the snooze button a million times and be late.

As you can see, I am clearly not a morning person. I don't function very well those first few minutes I'm awake every day!  I'm starting to think temping may not be for me...

  • So, put the phone next to the bed.  It is not that hard.

  • I use the alarm on my cell phone for temping and then my bedside alarm to wake up a few minutes later. If it helps, get another alarm and keep it by your bed and keep your other one further away for when you actually want to get up.

I wish it were that easy, lol. I actually don't have a place to plug it in and recharge near my bed. H does, so I could put it near him, but not near my side. And I need it to charge nightly--that thing dies daily. It has no battery life.

I thought of that originally--put the BBT near the phone, but no plug. I could always use an extension cord behind the bed and into the plug near H's side though...

  • As pp said put the phone by your bedside.  Can you set two alarms?  Set one for the middle of the night or a time when you've been sleeping for at least 3 hours.  Then set a second alarm for when you actually have to get up.  If that's too complicated get a bedside alarm clock too.

You have to want to do it though.  Try and stick it out for one cycle, after that I bet you'll be hooked, but if not you tried!

  • So have YH turn off your phone while you temp.  Seriously, this is not that hard.

  • Get an extension cord and run it over to your side of the bed and put your thermometer right beside your cell phone. That's what I had to do.
  • Once you get started you'll be hooked, just give it a try. Get a battery operated alarm and set it for a time earlier than when you need to be up. Have the BBT next to the alarm next to your side of the bed. As soon as the alarm goes off, take your temp, then go back to sleep until your phone that is across the room goes off. It literally takes me 30 seconds to turn off my alarm-take my temp-go back to sleep. It's part of my routine now. And trust me, I'm not a morning person at all. I hit the snooze a minimum of four times before getting up.

Yeah, this isn't that difficult.  I set my alarm for a time before I want to actually wake up - and have the alarm in slapping distance.  I wake up, or DH wakes me up if I don't hear it, take my temp write it down and go back to sleep.

Then another alarm - usually DH's - wakes me up to start my day.

I would set up a small alarm next to you and leave the phone where it is.  If you have to get up to get to the BBT, that's not good.  You have to take the BBT temp before you get up and walk around and talk.

Good luck, you really can get into the habit.

Ditto this.  If you really want to get pregnant, you'll find a way to do it.

  • I'm new to temping also and I kept my thermometer right next to my pillow so when I open my eyes it's the first thing I see.  Then I pop it in my mouth and shut my eyes for a minute or whatever until it beeps. I've missed a couple of days (mostly when I oversleep and DH has to force me out of bed!), but so far so good.  HTH!

  • I think like with any other new habit, it just takes a bit of time to get used to doing it everyday, despite how much you want to do it. I'm not a morning person and while most days I remember, there are a few days that I forget. Maybe some of the previous suggestions about alarm clocks/cell phone placement will be helpful but I also think it just takes time to get used to it.

    Good luck!

  • I liked the idea of a battery alarm, that would help the outlet issue... then just stick the BBT on top of the alarm so that you remember it before you get out of bed.  It will eventually just become a habit.  I have only forgotten once and that was because I really really had to pee!  lol

    GL!

  • I set two alarms too.  My phone alarm is for temping.  DH's phone alarm is for getting up 15 minutes later like a built-in snooze function for me.  Also, we don't have two plugs near our bedside table, so we charge our phones in the kitchen while we're cooking dinner.  Just a suggestion from a fellow non-morning person!
  • Um, stores sell alarm clocks. They are like $10. And can sometimes run on batteries if you don't want to spring for the $3 for an extension cord too.

    This is not hard. Seriously.

  • I use my iPhone for my alarm and at first I'd sit the thermometer on top of my phone so I had to touch it to turn the alarm off. Now its second nature!

I agree with the PPs saying to set two alarms...one by your head and one across the room.

  • My cell is my alarm too.  It's next to me and I put the BBT on top of my phone so I remember to temp.

  • I started temping my last month on the pill for practice LOL. I set my alarm, take my temp, and play on Twitter while I wait to make sure I stay awake. Then I put the temp in my phone and go back to bed. My BBT doesn't save my temps, so it must go in my phone.
