Austin Babies

Carriers & Slings - Discuss, Recommend

I know nothing about either, nor do I know the difference between the two, LOL!

I'm trying to space my 101 questions out, and still get ready to register ... so thanks for your patience. I'm a baby gear dummy!

What type, brand, etc do you like and why?

Re: Carriers & Slings - Discuss, Recommend

  • A lot of people love the Moby wrap.  It seems a little intimidating to me, but I registered for it anyway.

  • Moby: very soft, many different carries and great for newborns up to 4-6 months

ergo: 3 different carries( front facing in, back and hip) great for older babies, adjustable and has great support.

mei tai: soft, lots of options for carries, great for newborns and toddlers, easier than the moby (less fabric) and come in great colors and fabrics.

I have these three and love them all for different reasons.

  • ERGO!!!!!!!

I absolutely love my ergo - I used it in the newborn stage (which some people don't like --- but I loved) and I still use it all the time!

It fits great, doesn't strain my back -- you can wear it on the side, back or front.

    I love it.

I've also heard great things about the moby wrap (for when they're really little).

    GL!

  • I used the Moby a lot when DS was < 6 mo. It was nice in the cooler months since it kept him warm.

Now I have a linen ring sling, and I looove it so far. It's so easy to  put on and get DS in & out of it. I bought mine here https://www.sleepingbaby.net/

  • We used the moby daily for the first 3-ish months. It was an absolute life saver.

Now that she's older, we use a baby hawk (which is a mei tai style) when we're out and about. Love it. Both carriers were given/loaned to me, so I haven't had to actually buy one. If I did, I would look into the ergo, as I've heard nothing but good things about it.

We did register for a baby bjorn and that was strictly the "dad carrier." He LOVED wearing DD in that thing, and she adored it as well.

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • The Moby was great when DS was tiny, but he hated it by 4 months. We got a Baby Bjorn as a random gift - it's just ok - definitely wouldn't recommend it. I have several friends with the Ergo who LOVE it - many of them used it with the infant insert also! We're thinking about getting one, in fact.

  • Slings for newborns scare me. I thought they were all recalled because of the suffocation risk, but I guess not because I still see them for sale online. I was even too afraid to use the cradle hold in the Moby because DS's chin wouldn't stay a finger's width above his chest, so we use the newborn hug hold.

I have the Moby and Ergo Sport, and prefer the Ergo sport. I think they are both a PITA to put on, but that's probably because I don't use them often enough that it's been second nature. Also, carriers in summertime=sweaty baby and mom, but you don't have to worry about that! I am interested in trying the Beco (Becco?)Butterfly II. It also received good ratings in Baby Bargains. I want something I can put on super quickly and easily, which I don't find the Ergo to be, esp. with the nb insert. If you do get it, make sure you get the heart to heart insert and not the original one, which was crappy.

  • Obviously we haven't used it yet... but we got the ERGO along with the infant insert.  We are both really excited to use it!
  • Both my husband and I love the Ergo.  Our only regret is that we didn't get one sooner as we purchased ours when DD was about 9-10 months old.  YesYes

  • I had the Moby for when she was smaller (under 4 months) and now have the ergo. LOVE them both.
  • we just have the bjorn. i got it for about $20 at baby earth - it was a gaga deal. we love it - and i like that both dh and i can use it - unlike a lot of the other carriers.
  • I have a mei tai, a Moby, and a BB Slen woven.  I love all three for different reasons.

The Moby is great for keeping Jackson all nice and snuggly against me, plus it works great for when he wants to nap.  I have to say though, that I have the organic Moby, and I think the fabric is not as stretchy as the regular Moby, so I think it's going to last us longer.

I made my mei tai and love it for when the boys and I go trail walking.

My newest carrier is a BB Slen--it's a woven wrap carrier.  The style is the same as a moby, but not stretchy.  I got it specifically so that I can carry Jackson on my back when he gets a bit older.  I've worn him in front with it, and he seems very happy with it--he has taken several great naps in it already!

    :-)

  • As usual, thanks so much!

I thought it was specifically pouch slings that were recalled (like the Infantino ones), not all infant slings..?

Yet another Moby-lover here. We used Camy's for about 4 months before switching to a DIY Mei-Tei that I adore. :)

If the cost didn't make my husband pee himself, we'd have purchased a Beco or an Ergo... but the $13 in materials we spent for the MT sounded much more appealing/logical to him. Hmpf. If you think about it though - you can use the Beco or the Ergo for the first couple years, so it really is a great value.

  • We haven't used it yet, but got a Bjorn air carrier b/c DH said he would use it, too.  That was the big selling point for me...I'll let him carry DD around sometimes since I've been carrying her for almost 36 weeks!  ;)

hehe!  The Bjorn is the Dad carrier in our house as well  :-)

I love the Moby for the newborn stage and then I love my Ergo for 4mon+,  Megan will still ride in it in airports, or even in the mall sometimes!  I have a hot sling I got from a friend that never worked great for me.  And I have a ring sling too that I like, but I prefer the Ergo.

  • The Moby worked really well for us the first few months, but when it got hotter Luke was really uncomfortable in it and wouldn't stand to be worn for more than 10 minutes or so.

We bought a baby hawk (mai tai style) and liked it for the month or two that he'd let us wear him.  Once he could sit up in the cart, he preferred to be there or in the stroller.

This is not true. Only bag-type slings, such as  this Infantino, which was recalled, are unsafe. That is because of the way the baby is positioned in the sling and the thick padding. Other slings, when used properly, are perfectly safe for newborns. I have a hotsling that I wore DD in when she was very small. I used the cradle carry. If you use any carrier inappropriately, it can be dangerous.

That being said, we also have a mei tai and an Ergo and I really like both. I made my own Moby when DD was small and I think it was too wide or something. i also found it intimidating to deal with when she was teeny-tiny.

  • there's a group called Austin Babywearers, and they meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month.  I went to one meeting and everyone was really friendly and anxious to offer advise, explain the different types of slings/carriers, and why they liked different styles.  They even have a "sling library" so that you can try out a particular style before you commit to buying it.  (i got an ergo because i heard such great reviews. my baby isn't here yet, but i'm hoping she loves it!)

  • Check out mothering.com 's discussion board, they have a babywearing section a long with reviews on all types of carriers and brands. also there is https://babywearer.com/ that seems to be down a lot when I have tried it. I don't like mothering's discussion board as much for some things, but they definitely have a lot of info and a better search function than here for anything involving attachment parenting, including babywearing

I bought rings to make my own ring sling this week, so I just need to buy some fabric, which the sewing is pretty minimal and way cheaper than most slings you can buy. I have heard that the adjustable types of slings are way better than just a pouch sling that can be adjusted. Your baby may not like being in a cradle position much, which is most all you can do with the nonadjustable slings.

I am also going to make my own type of moby wrap, which really is just a long strip of fabric. I am hoping that by making a few types of carriers for cheap, I can slurge on an ergo which a lot of people recommend

Admittedly, all I know is what I have researched and the experiences of my friends, but at least in theory, I am a big advocate of baby wearing.

  • I have a Moby, a pouch sling, and ring sling, and an Ergo. DD hates the Moby and sometimes likes the pouch sling - when she likes it, it's nice because she will fall asleep in it. We both love the ring sling because it allows her to look over my shoulder, which is how she likes to be held, and it gives me a free hand. I can't wait until she has better head control and I can have both hands free using that one! We haven't tried the Ergo yet because we don't have the newborn insert.

  • I'm late to the party on this one, but I'll chime in anyway. I have a Bjorn I borrowed from my sister and a Pikkolo. The Bjorn was nice when she was little, but now that she's getting heavier, it's starting to bother my back, so I've moved to the Pikkolo. I bought mine here: www.carrymeaway.com

I used their comparison charts to decide which one was for me. For instance, I was looking at buckle carriers, so I used this one: https://www.carrymeaway.com/pages/CompareBuckleCarriers.html
