What's your reaction to "Bertram"

pronounced "BERtrum"

My husband's middle name is Bertram and it is an important family surname to his family.

What is your honest reaction to it as a first name?

ETA: thank you in advance!

Re: What's your reaction to "Bertram"

  • I think it's unusual but I don't hate it. I guess Bert is a common nn for it though which I don't care for as much.

  • I like it. :) I love uncommon older names.

  • Honestly, I recoiled. It has my least favorite root in it, BERT. That said, I could learn to love this name. It's German, has a lovely meaning, and isn't cre8ively spelled - it's easy to pronounce. There was something niggling me about it though - and I think it's the character on Family guy. Might be something else...I'll have to Google.

  • My first reaction - it's the old white dude on Mad Men.  I think your husband's parents did him a favor using it as the mn and if it were me, I'd follow suit.
  • I only like it as a middle name.
  • Thanks! That's helpful.

  • Hmm (seriously, my face just did this.)
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • My first reaction is that it is one of the little engines on Thomas the Tank Engine.  Very British and there is nothing wrong with that :)

  • My reaction is "why would you do that to your child?!" I get the importance of family names, but I wouldnt do it.

  • I wouldn't like the diminutive "Bert," but I like Bertram. I can honestly say I've never thought much of it or considered before, but I think it's a decent name, even more so because it is a family name for you.

  • I like it...it's classic but not overused.

I thought Thomas the Tank Engine, too.  There's a Bertram and a Bertie on that show.

I like it, although I definitely think old man when I hear it.  It reminds me of Bernard, which I also think would be pretty cute and old mannish.

  • Since you asked for intitial reactions, I am writing this before reading PP's comments.

I think of Bertram Van Muenster, who is the Executive Producer of "The Amazing Race" and used to Produce "Cops", two great shows. I've never seen a picture of him., I've only seen his name in the credits, but I imagine him to be of German descent, possibly tall, well-traveled, street smart and containing a good sense of humor. It's amazing how someone could get all of that from just a name, huh? Well, I guess it also somewhat comes from the title "Executive Producer".

SIDE NOTE: I was reading a Nameberry Article earlier tonight, and it listed Bertram as a "nerd name", which I don't get AT ALL. But I thought I'd at least mention it.

  • It reminds me of a very intelligent and nice guy that lived across the hall from me in the my college dorm.  It was his last name.  I think it's a fine choice for your child, especially if it's a family name.
