School-Aged Children

"Technology Skills"

SD started kindergarten just over a week ago. Went to the open house, and the teacher gave us a handout detailing some of the curriculum. Technology skills was included. This is verbatim from the handout:

  •  Identifies the parts of a computer (CPU, monitor, mouse, keyboard)
  • Can power up and shut down the computer properly
  • Uses the mouse to click, double-click, and drag
  • Uses the keyboard
  • Opens a specific program
  • Prints out a document
  • Uses computer-drawing programs to create picture stories with teacher guidance

I didn't even know what a computer was in kindergarten!! I know that technology is a big part of life, but geez.

Re: "Technology Skills"

  • Yes they start using computers very early on now.  In my children's school "computer lab" is one of the weekly special classes that they go to.

Exactly this for us too...at our school they call it "Technology" LOL

Gabe started on the computer very early.  (Mommy didn't know what to do with him and Daddy is a computer nerd)...so he was familiar with this stuff last year...the teacher caught on quick, and would let him play on the different computer programs (starfall, etc.) when he was done with the classwork.

I give it a few years before he's advanced beyond me and is teaching ME things!  LOL

This!  DD was also doing a lot of that last year...they pick it up really quickly.  Our kids will never know what it is like to NOT have computers around - crazy!

  • I am a special ed teacher and even my guys with physical disabilities are pretty fluent typers by fourth grade.  It's insane.  And they know how to get around firewalls on games that might be blocked at first, LOL.  I make them show me!
  • yep...and when my DD got a bad grade in handwriting last year, I laughed it off and told her it didn't matter because she won't be writing anyways....

    That made me LOL!

    LOL, me too!!

It's technology here too. It's some computer lab time, and they work with "smart" boards.  I love getting "homework" in that special. Haha!!

  • Ditto the PPs that they pick it all up SO quickly. My DS just started 1st grade and he can do all those things (and I don't remember "teaching" him). He also has 2 computers in his classroom and his class has weekly time in the computer lab.

  • I'm not worried about her picking things up, I hope I didn't come across like that.

She plays games on our computer (mostly Dora) and does really well. I was just surprised at how much they were required to do by the end of kindergarten!

  • My son learned those things in kindergarten and it's crazy!

Also, he's left-handed and they've taught him to just get used to right-handed things such as scissors and then also using the mouse with his right hand. I thought it was odd but yet...

  • My hubby and I used to be teachers (both changed careers 2 years ago) so we are quite computer literate, but geeze its crazy what our kids can do. Our 2 year old can navigate and open whatever she wants on the ipod touch and the 5 year old can open the laptop type in my password, open explorer, use bookmark tabs and play all sorts of games, what shocks me is the kid definately can't read!
