Can you pronounce this?

I really like the name Rhys, but I'm afraid people won't know how to pronounce it. It's actually the original form of Reese, but I guess people changed the spelling over the years.

Re: Can you pronounce this?

  • I knew that it was pronounced like Reese. To be honest though this is one of the few times that I don't like the original spelling over the modern spelling.

  • Reese is how I saw it, but only because I watch the Tudors and know of Jonathon Rhys Meyers.  I think in the US it will generally be a pronunciation issue.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

    He is so yummy. :)

But, yes, its a Welsh name, so its very popular over in Scotland and England. Stinks, because I really prefer this spelling over 'Reese'. Oh well, off to another name. :)

  • I had a student with this name, and he totally had to tell me how to pronounce it on the first day of school.  I always feel bad when that happens!
  • I knew how to pronounce it, and I do really like the name.  However, I think quite a few people will mispronounce it :(.  DH had no idea how to say it, and the only reason I knew is because I head them talking about the actor on tv one day.

  • Yes, I knew how to pronounce it.  It's actually the male/masculine spelling, whereas Reese is generally the female spelling.

To be totally honest about the spelling, I wouldn't have known how to pronounce it if I wasn't a huge Tudors fan.

  • I like that name :) I knew how to pronounce it. I also don't think it would be that hard to figure out, especially when you consider  how many kids in your child's class will have names spelled differently than the norm.

At least this spelling actually makes sense, unlike silly ones with random x's or y's or apostrophes that have no meaning other than the parents just liking how it looked.

  • It was on my list for a boy, even though everyone seems to be naming their girls Reese.  I was going to spell it Rhys.  I like it better.  More original.
  • I love that spelling!  I used to know a little boy named Rhys, and he was the cutest little guy around!
  • An aquaintance named her son Rhys so I know how to pronounce it.  (And I'm a huge Tudors fan!)  We were both in the pedi's office one day and every member of the staff miss pronounced it (Rice).  Her only response was, "happens all the time."

I love a lot of the English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish names too but the spellings just don't lend themselves to American English.  Sioban for example.
