Baby Names

How popular is Oliver?

We won't be trying for at least another year or so but I really love the name Oliver. DS is Rowan (which is a tree) and Oliver means "olive tree" so I think it'd totally work if we had another boy. However, I have a feeling it is getting super popular but when I look at my city's hospital records, the only hospital that has the name records listed is an inner city one with the most popular names being DeAnthony, La-A, etc. so I don't think that really helps much :)

Re: How popular is Oliver?

  • I never used to hear it, and now I have had 2 first grade students with the name.  Plus I see it here on the baby boards more and more (though not as much as names like Owen).

Did you check the SSA site?

Really - can you post a link to the "La-A" records?  That would be a first as far as verifiable proof.

  • It has definitely jumped in popularity over the last 10 years ...

    Year of birth Rank
    2009 98
    2008 118
    2007 140
    2006 173
    2005 209
    2004 229
    2003 245
    2002 268
    2001 299
    2000 305

I don't think it will be the next Jacob, but if you are overly concerned about names in the Top 100, you might want to stay away from it. I love Rowan, by the way! :)

  • I don't care if it is popular or not I love the name Oliver!
  • I know one little boy named Oliver in my area. I do think it'll make the top ten sometime in a few areas, but I think Aidan and Aiden will get there first.

Oliver is currently at number 98.

  • DH wanted Oliver if DD was a boy. I was worried that it was becoming popular, and I'm glad DD wasn't a boy because we might have used it. Popular is okay for me, but trendy (popular for a short period of time and then will be very UNpopular) is not.

  • I love that name!!! My husband & I are TTC right now, and have tossed around names to get an idea of what the other one likes. We agree on almost all of the names so far, except Oliver. I like the name and it's nice because it's my dads name, but he doesn't like it and won't tell me why he doesn't. If we did name him after my dad, we'd name him after his dad and my step dad too. So he would be  Oliver David Edward. I love love love love it!! Just have to convice DH to love it now. LOL

  • I know a few little Olivers, but I don't think it'll become crazy popular.

  • It depends on what country you're talking about. In the UK, it's in the top 5 or 10, if I remember right. I love it. :)

  • I absolutely LOVE it and have for years.  The only one I have ever met in real life is like 25 years old and I know a TON of people with young kids.  Maybe it depends on what area of the country you are in?
