TTC After a Loss

for those that had testing done after m/c

I'm honestly still dumb to it. I don't even know the proper terms to use. All I know is that since this was my second loss my doctor will be testing my baby for all sorts of things. Can anyone tell me how likely it is that an answer will be found? And also how long does it take for results to come in on average?

And she is now referring me to a high risk doctor where evidently he will be testing myself and my husband for some things as well. Does anyone know what kind of tests might be done or what they might be looking for?

Thanks for any tips you can give me.

  • I am sorry for your losses. They will probably test your baby for the common chromosomal disorders, like trisomies, Turner's syndrome, chromosomal deletions, translocation...things like that (Downs falls in here). They will most likely also test the placenta and cord for clots or abnormalities.

The HR dr. will probably give you a RPL panel (repeat pregnancy loss) which identifies clotting disorders and autoimmune disorders.

They will probably also tets you and hubbie to see if you carry things that may cause loss, like balanced translocation. For me at least, cystic fibrosis, fragile x, and thalissmia was included in that (and thewy have recently added SMA).

Good luck! I hope you get some answers, or some comfort from your results.

  • I'm so sorry for your losses.

I was sent for genetic testing and clotting blood work after our second loss. Our baby came back positive for Trisomy 21 (Downs) and extra "material" on Chromosome 1. We met with a genetic counselor who basically just got our family history and explained what everything meant. We were both sent for genetic testing that all came back normal. The babys results took about 4 weeks, ours took about 2 weeks.

Even though the results basically told us that our miscarriage was a just one of those "flukes" we are glad we got some answers.  It makes me feel that there is still hope for us.

I hope you find some of the answers you are looking for and best of luck.

  • I can't offer any answers. I just wanted to say I am glad your doctor is sending you for testing and to a high risk specialist.

I hate how all the doctors I have seen are living by the 3 loss rule.

I can't believe that. It makes me sick. I already can't help but wonder if I'd have lost this baby if we'd done testing the first time. I'll be praying that you won't ever have to worry about the three loss rule.
