NBR: Best friend labor - should I worry?

My best friend called me last night. She was on the way to the hospital to be induced. They were going to ripen her cervix last night and start meds this morning. I haven't heard anything. I know inductions can take a long time (I was lucky that mine didn't), but I can't help but worry a little bit. What do you think?

  • I'd say that no news might be good news. My induction took 28 hours total, and there was nothing to tell really until the next evening. If you figure she went in last night, it was probably a couple hours before they actually placed the meds to ripen her cervix. So things may just be getting rolling!

  • I wouldn't worry. Sounds like my induction, and mine could have easily gone this long. I got to skip my last dose of cervical ripening meds, otherwise my 4:45 delivery would have been closer to 8:45, since those meds have to work for 4 hours before they do anything else. I also went from 3cm to 10cm in about 4 hours, also not common.

  • I wouldn't worry.... for my induction I went in the night before for cervical ripening and things didn't really get rolling until the next day.  It probably would have taken longer too, but the nurse accidently broke my water when she put in the last cervadil.
  • I'm with the other ladies....my induction took from 3 p.m. on 7/30 until 4 p.m. on 8/1 -- 49 hours -- before things got rolling.  I had cervadil 2x and a day of pitocin (started at 2 ml/hour and worked my way all the way to the max dose of 20 ml/hour) and STILL wasn't progressing.  I was very, very close to being told I needed a c-section.  When the OB finally (accidentally) broke my water, and with pitocin restarted, I finally got rolling into active labor (8 hours of active labor then and 2 hours of pushing).

I would say that if you want to send her a text, go ahead...but she may be chilling out in her room, as I was, and just waiting on something more to happen.

  • Thanks ladies - I think I'm just getting anxious for her. I'm not sure what time they started the pitocin this morning. I texted her husband earlier tonight and he wrote back saying she was at 7.5 cm, so hopefully she's there or close now.

This. Mine took over 24 hours from the placement of cervadil, so she could still be in labor!
