**ME**
So excited, nervous, and clueless all at the same time. This is my first child to go off to elementary school so I dont have any idea of what to expect.
Yet another reason Im SO glad this board finally got added. (just in time too)
I hope Im not the only one who will be walking their child to their class while taking hundreds of pictures. Im not sure which Ill do more..cry or take pictures. (
Is your dc excited? L is not at all. I can see him crying once it is time to say goodbye. He is excited about all of his school supplies, clothes, bookbag, etc but actually going....not so much. He is concerned that there arent as man toys (esp cars) in the class room as his preschool class. That and the "big" bus doesnt have seat belts like his preschool bus.
To be 5 again and those be your only worries in life. HA!
His first day is 8/30 and the closer it gets the more anxious I get. Im going to end up having a panic attack!! Im just worried about how he is going to handle being in "big kid school" He is super close to his sisters who are in their 2nd year of preschool. The 2 buildings are right next to each other. He is also upset they cant come to his school yet.
Re: Raise your hand (with tissue in hand) if you have a Kindergatener!!
Hi! Me too!
My son will be starting kindergarten on 8/30 as well. Even though I have an older daughter, who will be in 5th grade, I'm still feeling incredibly emotional about my youngest starting "real" school.
My daughter was pretty independent. I was excited for her to begin kindergarten, but I didn't anticipate that she might cry as she got on the bus. She's just too proud and tough for that. He's a little more sensitive. I'm hoping he boards the bus and all goes well on the first day.
Still, I know he's absolutely ready for kindergarten, and once he gets in there, he'll be fine. But I'm getting nervous, too!
I can SO relate to this. It's tough having a more sensitive boy. My DS is fairly cautious too. Not in a "scaredy-cat" way, just in a "look before you leap" way. For example, after preschool one day, a bunch of his best friends were climbing a tree in the schoolyard. He was standing on the ground watching. I could tell he wanted to do it, but that he just wasn't ready to shinny up there yet! Honestly, I'd rather my son NOT climb the school's trees while a bunch of other boys are climbing them, but I don't want him to feel afraid to do stuff.
Yeah, Ls is a full day but they do have a nap period. Not sure how long and I know he wont sleep (at least everyday) but he will have to at least lay down and rest.
I wish we got HBO. I saw the show being promoted on a different channel. Looked really good for kids to see what its like.
DD1 starts on the 31st. I'm on the ledge about being excited/sad about it. I'm ready for a break from the summer, but I'm not ready for her to take that next step in to growing up. She's all shades of excited and can't wait. We have a countdown on the calender with a tinkerbell sticker on the day so she knows when she starts. I think I am going to cry when I see her walk in.

SD started kindergarten the first Thursday in August.
She was very excited to go, and loves it. She actually started tearing up the other day when I picked her up - I asked why she was crying and she said, "Because I miss my teacher!" I reassured her that she would be going back the next day, and her teacher would still be there
I've got 24 of them right now (I teach K)! I love how the parents are on the first day of school and I know I will be nervous when it's my turn to be on the other side of things, haha.
I tell parents all the time that they can come by the school to "drop off supplies" on the first day if they want to sneak a peek in the classroom. This little trick might work with your son's teacher, too, haha.

I"m right there with you. Hoping this is because I'm pregnant lol but I started tearing up at our sneak peak talking to the woman about the bus schedule.
My DS starts tomorrow and I am panicking about the bus. He has insisted all summer that I am NOT to drive him to school. The bus is the big deal for him this year. I dont want to take that away from him and he's only going to have about a 5 min ride each direction....thank god! I know I will be an absolute mess tomorrow
I teach kindergarten and we're 3 weeks in already....good luck, everyone! K will start next fall and I get weepy just thinking about it.
For those who are worried about their kiddos being nervous, etc. you might try playing school with them if they're willing--it's a casual, low-pressure way to introduce things like sitting "criss-cross applesauce" on the carpet during a story, raising their hand before talking, or how to follow someone in a line, etc. so that they're familiar with some of the basics. There are a few more tips (list of books about starting school, etc.) here for anyone who's interested.
If it makes anyone feel better, this is my 3rd year in kindergarten and in 6 classes (a.m. and p.m. each year), I think we've had a total of maybe 5 or 6 kids cry when their parents left. Every time, they were fine within 15 minutes (and usually within less than 5 minutes). Now that I'm a parent and I know how it must feel to leave them when they're upset, I always sneak off when I can and call the parents to let them know their little one is doing fine--I can just imagine them worrying all day that their child is miserable, and the thought alone breaks my heart!
Have a good year!
