?'s for ladies who got pregnant while bf

I'm not quite sure the best board to ask these questions but I'm hoping this one works?

 1.  Did your milk dry up when you got pregnant and if so, how far along were you?

2.  If your milk didn't dry up, did LO refuse because of the taste?

3.  Did any of you try More Milk 2 to help keep your supply up while you were breastfeeding and pregnant?

I want to breastfeed DS for the full year but we also want to start trying for another when DS is around 9-10 months.  I was trying to get enough milk frozen for the few months I could be pregnant at the end in case my milk dries up but I got to 600 oz and now all of a sudden my supply just isn't what it used to be!  Thanks SO much for your help!  It's hard to find info on this situation!

  • I know everyone is different but I didn't have any problems nursing DS while pregnant.  He was down to 2-3 feedings a day though.   DS was 12 months when I got pregnant.  My doctor said to stop nuring when I was 6 months pregnant because it may cause contractions but if your DS will be at least 10 months old when you get pregnant you should be fine.  I didn't try to get more milk because it is already a starin on your body being pregnant and BF and I was super tired in the beginning.  Also, will DS start regular milk at 1 year.  Anyway, things went well for us...GL

  • 1. No, no issues.

    2. Nope, if I didn't wean my kids by the time I was in 2nd trimester I'm sure I would have been tandem nursing.....

    3. No, didn't need it.

I didn't nurse past 13 weeks PG though, but I do hear that your milk might change around 20 weeks. Not sure......

I plan to give him breastmilk as long as my body will allow but would probably start to wean after the first trimester (don't think I could handle tandem nursing), after that I would start regular milk.  I definitely want him to have breastmilk the full first year though.

Thanks for your help everyone!  Your answers were very helpful!

  • DD was 9 months old, when I found out that I was pregnant.  She was nursing 3x per day and that continued until she was 11 months old.  My supply seemed fine.  At 11 months, I started transitioning her to whole milk, but I continued to give her breastmilk until her first bday.

My nipples really hurt during nursing after I found out that I was pregnant.  The discomfort became more tolerable, but returned around 16 weeks.  I was ready to be done with nursing at a year and DD did fine with whole milk, so it was a very easy transition for our family.

  • DS was 8 months old when I got pregnant.  I did not dry up but I did notice a drop in my supply.  However, at 4 weeks pregnant (yes we were trying so I knew ASAP when I had a BFP) I noticed DS was started to wean.  As the weeks went on it was harder and harder to get him to nurse and drink my pumped milk.  My midwife had no issues with me nursing during my entire pregnancy but did warn that he would probably wean around 20 weeks as that's when your milk changes more like colistrum.  I did not take More Milk 2 (its safe) because he no longer liked the taste so I didn't want to get full.  What I ended up doing was supplementing with cows milk (per breastfeeding expert Dr. Jack Newman, excluvively BF babies can have cows milk after 6 months and my doctor was also ok with this) and by 10 months old he was on cows milk 100%.  Because it was gradual, I had no issues when I stopped.
  • It's definitely different for everyone, but here is my experience.

My milk didn't dry up until I decided that I was done with BFing, 12 months.  I got pregnant when DS was 6 months, so I BF'd for quite a while after becoming pregnant again.  DS also had no issue with a change in taste.

I have no idea what More Milk 2 is.

  • My supply did and continues to drop. I found out I was pregnant when Porter was 5 months. I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and still nursing. I've had to supplement with frozen breast milk (1 bottle a night) I started a prescription for my supply around 18 weeks. My firast sign that I was pregnant was LO started refusing our morning nursing. It didn't last long. He nurses more now then he ever did. I do plan to tandem nurse, so I'm hoping he continues to nurse with the way my supply is until then. For me its been a very stressful time. Good luck!
  • My supply dropped almost immediately. Its one of the reasons I knew I needed to POAS. I found out I was pregnant when LO was almost 12 months old. I felt bad because I wanted him to self-wean when he was ready and my body was making the decision for him. We started cows milk about a week before his birthday because I couldn't pump enough for him. I kept up with nursing twice a day for another month and a half then he basically weaned himself. I think the milk changed for him but he seemed okay weaning and was drinking cow's milk fine. I know it probably worked out for the best and I did make it to a year so I'm okay with it.
