Working Out

Does anyone else feel totally weak and light-headed when working out?  I don't get it...I used to run 3-4 miles several times a week and do strength training on the other days.  I haven't been able to run anymore so I have been using the elliptical or walking on an incline on the treadmill but I feel like I could pass out at any moment! I also make sure I have eaten and am hydrated when I work out so what gives?!!

Re: Working Out

  • Well hell, at least you have the energy to work out!  I usually walk a mile with a friend when I am at work.  That's been the extent of my work out lately but I seem to lose energy at the end whenI never did before.

  • I would talk to your Dr.  I regularly work out, worked out until del with DD and never had that problem.

  • Definitely talk to your doctor. If you worked out consistently before you should be able to continue give or take a few off days. When you were running were you running at the same pace as pre-pregnancy? I found that I had a lot of trouble if I didn't slow down a little bit.
  • Yes, I hate that!  Before I was pregnant with my son I was running marathons, but then in the 1st tri of that pregnancy I was getting dizzy running at all.  It got better in 2nd tri, but I had to run slower than pre-pregnancy.  I still did 30 minutes of cardio and then weight lifting and yoga 3x/week throughout the whole pregnancy, but I had to modify the cardio based on how I was feeling.  1st tri was mostly cycling because I needed to sit down, 2nd tri I was able to run again (slowly), and 3rd tri I moved to the eliptical because of circulation issues in my legs when I ran.  This pregnancy is the same way for me so far.  Everyone's body reacts differently to pregnancy.  If you're fed and hydrated and not too warm, I'm not sure that there is anything you can do other than reduce the intensity of your workout.

  • Watch your heartrate and intensity and take it down a notch.  I teach Zumba and lately I've had to take it down a notch stopping regularly for drinks and to just get my heartrate back down to acceptable levels.  Also I've found my electrolytes get outta whack REALLY fast.  I can't exercise without gatorade or powerade or something like that plain water just isn't enough.
  • I am definitely in the same boat. I used to run fairly regularly before I got pregnant, but even running in the first few weeks of pregnancy (before I even knew), I was feeling dizzy and lightheaded.  For me, I had to take the intensity down a lot.  I walk instead of run now, and if I do the elliptical, I try to take it pretty easy.  I think the dizziness and lightheaded feeling probably has to do with blood volume and blood-flow. In any case, it is probably our bodies telling us to ease up a bit!
