Did anyone else have to do this after the NT scan? My levels appeared high (147), so I'm going in tomorrow for the 3-hour test (fasting, blood, drink, blood, blood, blood). I'm a little nervous about it all. Any tips?
Don't be worried. Sounds like your doc is just being proactive. Hopefully you get good news.
As for the test, I never had to do the 3 hour so I am not sure how much of a pain it is besides just the long waiting time. I am in the minority here but I thought the glucose drink was delicious
I didn't think the drink was all that nasty, but I like sweet stuff. It was a bit much though.
I took the 3 hour about 5 years ago. Just make sure to take it easy. After the 2nd blood draw, the nurse needed to help me back to my chair, because I nearly blacked out. The waiting is what sucked the most. And the hunger. Just take it easy, relax, and you should be fine. Hopefully they have comfy chairs for you to wait in. The lab I went to had Lazy Boys
was the 147 your fasting number or after you had eaten? if you'd eaten how long had it been? Just curious! If it was your fasting that could mean something but if you had just eaten than it may be fine.. good luck!!
Well, I did not mean to fast, but since my NT was scheduled really early morning, I had drank the 32oz water and had one bite (I swear!) of DH's bagel before the ultrasound.
This time the nurse has me fasting from 10pm to 9am (appt time), so its not much of a challenge. I'm wondering if I should/shouldn't be eating special (high sugar/low sugar?) the day(s) before.
Not too too crazy about all the blood draws on an empty stomach either!
They did a 1 hour glucose test at the same appt as my NT scan; I think some offices just lump all those fun things together in one visit. I hope your 3 hr goes by quickly and shows good results!
I did the 1 hr test at 12 weeks so my doctor would have a baseline for when I am tested later on. I was really gaggy when I tried the test the first time and I had to come back a few days later - the blood draws arent that big of a deal - just chug the drink and bring your ipod to help distract yourself. Drinking from a straw may help you too.
i did a 3 hour test a few years ago - no big deal - bring reading material and ipod - its a long time to hang out in an office waiting room. If you get nausesous your doctor will let you lie down in a room. Bring cheese or some sort of protein to eat as soon as you finish your last blood draw - the glucose makes some people quesy and protein helps.
I had to do the 1 hour test when I was 8 wks due to family history of diabetes. I failed it and now have to do the 3 hour. My OB told me that even if I pass the 3 hour test, I have to do the 1 hour all over again at 24 wks. Ugh.
The drink is not all that bad, it's just the fasting and waiting that gets tiresome. Good luck and take a book with you!
