Developmental pediatrician appoitment from hell

Matthew and Chris had a developmental ped appoitment in Jersey City the other day. I had to go alone since George "couldn't" get off of work because he forgot to take off. I had to drive to Jersey City with all three kids alone. My GPS was being wonky and wanted me to go through the Holland Tunnel for some reason which would take me to NYC NOT to Jersey City which is right outside of NYC.

So, after I figured it out on my own, I called up George to let him know. In the appoitment from HELL! The doctor told me that PT and OT aren't doing anything for Chris and are useless. "I should be doing more with them." according to the doctor. He told me that Chris' light sensitivity is because of his blue eyes not because of sensory issues. He told me that he doesn't believe in sensory issues causeing problems. Then he told me everything the genecist told us was bullshit.

This guy didn't know anything at all about 16p11.2 and is now claiming to be an expert in it? And he kicked at Chris when he was "W" sitting and then told me it was a learned behavior and to not let him "get away with it". WTF? My kid sits that way because he'll fall over if he doesn't!

He told me we're wasting time with the orthotics with Matthew because it's not correcting the problem. They both get fatigued walking long distances and I usually carry them. He told me I'm babying them and letting them get away with things.

After this he looked at Matthew and told me that he thought that Matthew may have a tethered cord not Aspergers like originally thought. So, we're off to the neurologist (that is already scheduled) for that one. But....I had to argue with him about things with this even. He told me that I have never brought up a sacral dimple with him; I did and argued with him. He looked through his notes and saw it there. Almost a year of wondering and we may have our answer which we could have had last year if he would have listened.

Then the way home was awesome! Again the GPS was effing up again! It wanted me to go onto a road that didn't say anything about tolls and when I got on it I had to get a ticket for a toll. NJ/NY girls, since when did 78 have a toll on it? I had no money on me so I had to get off at the next exit and figure out how to pay the toll. Luckily I did scrape up 60 cents in the ashtray and when I went to the pay cash lane there was no toll booth person and no place to throw the money into. The person behind me was beeping and yelling and the sign said I couldn't go. I'm sure I'll get a effing fine on that one. DH told me to keep my ticket and we'll call someone up tomorrow and talk to them. So I ended up driving through Bayone and having no clue where Iwas going with the GPS wanting me to get back onthe toll road.....I call up DH and we end up getting into a fight with me swearing and throwing the f-bomb all over *luckily the boys were sleeping* and it took an hour and driving through Newark to get back on 78 but I did it without paying another toll.

Re: Developmental pediatrician appoitment from hell

  • Whoa. The dr sounds like a toolbox. And mean. I feel like developmental pedis need to have a special bedside manner - and that guy sounds about as comforting as an ice cream cone with barbed wire in it. Ouch!

    You poor thing! I say it's time for some retail therapy! You deserve a present for enduring all that!! {{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}

  • Wow, what a day. I am sorry you had to deal with that.
  • That def. deserves the title appt. from hell."  I hope you can find another developmental pediatrician who has more of a clue and a better attitude.

    Oh, and one time I tried to program my GPS to take me to the Tappan Zee bridge to avoid the GW bridge (driving from DC to NH), and sent me over the GW bridge to get to the Tappan Zee.  Gah!

    Wow, that dr. sounds like a winner! At least you have the knowledge to know that he is an idiot. I feel badly for the kids whose parents listen to him.

    Maybe you got on a short stretch of the turnpike if you had to pay a toll? It's confusing over there.

  • Oh wow - what a dbag! Are there other options for devel pedis where you are? Do you think that PT and OT are helping your son? If not, can you find other therapists? If it is helping, does it matter what the dr thinks (do you need a script from him to get services?) Otherwise, just forget what he said and do what you know is best for your kids. Sorry you had to deal with that!

    To the pp - no, sensory disorders are not recognized by DSM yet. That's why insurance companies and schools could pretty much care less about it. There are OT researchers working to get it into the next edition of the DSM, but not sure if that will happen or not. I think (if I'm remembering correctly) that one of the biggest issues is that there isn't a clear way to diagnose it.

    Oh wow - what a dbag! Are there other options for devel pedis where you are? I called a place yesterday who said they aren't comfortable working with us.  So, I have a few other places to call around to.  Otherwise we're driving to Philly for CHOP.Do you think that PT and OT are helping your son? They are very much helping.  He said this in reference to both kids.  I did have to get a script for both kids so I argued if not I would have just done to the pediatrician abou it. If not, can you find other therapists? If it is helping, does it matter what the dr thinks (do you need a script from him to get services?) Otherwise, just forget what he said and do what you know is best for your kids.
