Goats Milk

I have been hearing some very positive things about goats milk vs cows milk as a baby is starting to wean.

We are going to continue nursing in the AM and night until S is ready to stop but it is getting harder and harder to feed her during the day.  She is much more interested in food and is a super busy baby.

I have gone back to work on Tues and Thurs and pumping on such an odd schedule has been hard.  She gets about 6-8 oz of formula twice a weel and every formula we have tried causes an allergy.

So we have thought about trying those rare formula feedings as non-mommy milk.

I would love to hear about your thoughts and experiences on goats milk.  Online I find the typical mixed opinions.

Re: Goats Milk

  • I have read mixed things about goat's milk too.  I definitely wouldn't put her on that instead of breastmilk or formula (although I don't know how old your baby is).  For those rare formula feedings, could you try a hypoallergenic formula (Similac Alimentum or Enfamil Nutramigen)?  They are a lot more expensive, but since she doesn't go through much, it might not be so bad.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I personally think it is odd to drink cow's milk (even though I grew up on it) or the milk of any animal outside of our species.  If we outgrow the need for breastmilk, why would we need the milk of another animal?  If your daughter has a milk allergy and she is at the age to start transitioning to milk, maybe you could try fortified nondairy milk such as almond, soy, or rice?  Again, probably an unpopular opinion but just had to throw it out there.

  • My best friend from college gives her son goat's milk.  He's just passed 2 y.o. and still nurses in the evenings before bed but drinks milk during the day with meals and snacks.  I'm considering switching DD from WCM to goat's milk as well just because I prefer goat's milk myself and it's what I was given as child b/c I had a milk allergy.  But I also think almond, soy or rice is a fine alternative too if the child is of the right age.  Yours seems little young but I know some people start their LOs on non-BM alternatives earlier to avoid formula or to round out BM in bottle or whatever.  I'd just talk to her pedi about it and make sure you know what the issues may be.

  • We just started gived DS about 3 oz a day. We started on cows milk but he has an allergy so we switched to goats. So far we have had no problems and he seems to like it. My husband said it taste better than cows milk, in his opinion. FWIW, if my supply hadn't dropped due to being 30 weeks pregnant I would only be giving breastmilk still. I don't see the point in formula this late in the game since its only a few oz a day.

Hmm...same here...maybe not such an UO?
