First baby & being induced Saturday...Any advice/suggestions?

Hi,

I will be 40 weeks on Sunday.  Doc is looking to induce me on Saturday as I am still only 1 centimeter and nothing seems to be happening.

Any advice or suggestions? Or what to expect when induced?  Things that made it easier for you?  Things you wish you would have brought with to the hospital?  Anything I should be aware of?  I am a bit afraid as I hear labor pains are more intense when induced.

Thanks

  • Yeah! You get to meet your little one soon! How exciting!

I was induced as well. Was 4 cm for about 3 weeks, lost the mucos plug and still nothing.. DD was 9 pounds 6 onz and 8 days overdue so they needed to get her out!!

They wanted to give me the pitocin right away upon entering the hospital. I asked them to break my water first and see if that would start the labor. It did and then it stopped and so they needed to start the pitocin. It was not happening as fast as I wanted it to so i asked them to up the dose. That was a mistake for me. I went from 4 cm-8 cm in 45 min and was in a lot of pain. Although my birth plan included no epidural, i ended up needing one, I would for sure be open to your various options while going through it.

We had a doula and she was really great, Woodwinds provides one free of charge if they are available. Where are you delivering?

I would say expect it to hurt but be open to the different drugs and meds available. Make sure you charge your batteries for your camera ahead of time and that you delegate someone to take the pictures for you as the moment goes really fast. Our duola did that for us and that was fab!

Delegate someone to grab a copy of the day's newspaper so you will have it for her baby book. I wish i had thought ahead to that. I did however organize someone to bring a cake so we could have a birthday cake and some pictures on her birthday. That was really fun.

Bring a bag of goodies for your partner to munch on as the hospitals do not feed them. I made hubby a special bag with magazines and treats so he would be taken care of. Also, make sure your partner brings their pillow and a blanket, the one we had sucked and DH ended up with a bad neck.

Also, if you are planning to breastfeed make sure you spend a lot of time with the lactation consultants on site. While the hospital was trying to kick us out on our last day, we were fighting to stay in a bit longer to spend time with the consultants, take more sitz's baths etc..

    Best of luck!!

  • Try not to be discouraged if it fails.  I was induced at 39w6d and sent home on my due date because the meds didn't work.  My water broke at 40w3d and my son was born later that day.  I was upset when I was sent home still pregnant, but I was able to deliver him naturally in the end.  I don't mean to scare you - I just wish I had known that it's actually pretty come for inductions to fail.  I hope that yours works, and you have a quick and easy delivery :)

Oh!  Bring some DVDs or tapes (if your hospital has a DVD player or a VCR) to keep boredom away, and bring some snacks for your labor partner!

  • I went into the hospital having contracts, but with very little progress so they ended up giving my pitocin to speed things up.  They give me a drug to take the edge off the pitocin so I could relax.  Keep your options open and ask lots of questions.

    Where are you delivering at?

  • I wish we had taken more pictures and videos right when she was arriving and of me and baby after delivery. Also, don't feel like you have to let everyone visit you in the hospital or right when you come home.

Any reason why they are inducing before you are at 40weeks? Not trying to worry you but I'd question why you need to be induced unless it is medically necessary. Most 1st time moms don't deliver before their due date and if you are induced you have a higher chance of c-section. I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way- just don't agree with many docs inducing before due date when there isn't a medical reason.

  • Thank You, Thank You!

    To answer a few questions.

    1) We are delivering at St. John's.

    2) They are looking to induce as the last two visits my blood pressure has started to creep up.  I am a plus size women with no additional health issues.  However, I think the induction is more of a precautionary measure.

Please let me know if you need more details.  Thanks!

  • I delivered at St. John's and loved it there. My cousin just had her baby there last week and had a great experience as well. I can see why they would want to induce. I was induced (5 days late) because my blood pressure increased at my 40 week visit too. Good luck!

  • I was induced at 37w2d due to preeclampsia.  I went in on a Tuesday night to start with the Cervadil.  Even with pitocin & painful contractions, I never progressed past 1 cm & ended up having a c-section on Wednesday night.

The only advice I have is to not expect anything to go a certain way.  You just never know!

    GL!
