Feeling sick AFTER I eat

Anybody else having this problem? I know they say you are supposed to eat to KEEP from feeling sick, but I've been feeling ill right after I eat anything resembling a regular meal. (If I eat several things over a longer period of time, like an hour or two, it's not an issue.) Is there anything I can do about this besides not eating a full meal for the next few weeks? I'm a teacher and going back to work soon, and it's not considered professional to eat in front of my students, so I can't keep grazing like I have been for the last few weeks.

Re: Feeling sick AFTER I eat

  • Sometimes food fixes my nausea, and sometimes it makes it worse. They do say small frequent meals are the best way to go. Is it you that considers it unprofessional to eat in front of the students or the principal? I am sure your principal would understand. Can you keep saltines at your desk and sneak them in every now and then?

  • Well, in all honesty I sort of feel like I'm the teacher and can do what I want, but that's not really the right attitude, is it :)? We have a new principal this year so I don't know how she feels about it. Pretty sure that chances of my getting caught eating in class are slim, as they usually only seriously come around to observe two or three times a year, but again, new principal and who knows?
  • Yeah I hear ya. I was a teacher for a very short period of time. But your principal would probably find it less professional to vomit in front of your students if you don't eat. lol!

  • I'm a teacher too. I find my students learn better when they aren't hungry. I make healthy snack available anytime (cheese strings, apples, granola bars etc.) So if they can eat I feel like I can eat.

  • I do usually feel nauseous after I eat too.

  • I am the same way.  I actually find myself not want to eat anything.  Sometimes I do have to eat something to avoid feeling sick but 3-4 crackers and problem is solved.  On Wednesday I ate and then felt horrible and sick.   Ironically 2 hours later I had like the tiniest burp and felt so much better.  I think it is the gas that makes me feel so sick from eating.
  • Same here.

I'd sneak some saltines if you are able. Who knows, by then your nausea might be gone.

  • I have the same problem.  Normally I just feel soo sick and full after lunch and dinner.  I think the issue is that I can't eat as much in one sitting as I used to by I forget and eat way to much at once.  Small meals is the best option and I am learning that slowly. GL.
  • Hi all. So I had my orientation with my nurse midwife last week and I'm chock full of information she gave out. The nausea, as we all know, is because of the surge in hormones (duh you may say). What I didn't know, is that the hormones also cause muscle relaxation, including the sphincter muscle in your esophagus that regulates the food as it goes in and prevents acid from going out of your stomach into your esophagus.

When you eat a full meal, this muscle is not able to do its job as properly as normal and hence, you feel sick. Whenever acid overflows into your esophagus from your stomach, it always causes nausea. That's why people who normally have acid reflux have this problem. Of course, it's compounded when you are also pregnant. So this is why you should try to eat smaller meals throughout the day instead of eating 3 huge meals. Neat stuff, huh. Hope that was informative, and I agree with PP that it would probably be better for you to snack in front of your students than to vomit in front of them. Wink

  • yes- definitely queasy after I eat.

I'm not so good at small meals, but is it possible for you to drink milk between small meals during class... can easily be concealed in a water bottle.  I vaguely remember my teachers drinking from a water bottle during class... that said, I assumed it was booze.

  • But if I vomit in front of them then maybe people will feel bad for me and I can go home early . . . :)

School doesn't start for another week and a half-ish so hopefully I will be feeling better by then. I found out my schedule and I will have a break every 2 hours or so, so hopefully  I'll be able to space out my food over the day.
