1st Trimester

So congested... but not sure what to do

I thought I just had really bad allergies at night for a few days, but my symptoms seemed to progress into what felt like a sinus infection. I have been so stuffed up and have had a sinus headache for three days. I have tried, steam and a neti pot, but cant seem to even get water to pass through with the neti pot. I did go to the Doctor and was prescribed Cephalexin. I was told it was a class b drug and safe during pregnancy, but I am very weary of taking antibiotics, especially in my first trimester of pregnancy. Does anyone have any recommendations of what I should take to get rid of all my congestion?

  • Unless you're having intense sinus pain or fevers, less likely to be a bacterial infection. It sounds like you're already doing the right things, maybe just give it a couple days and keep the abx on standby.

  • Pregnancy hormones naturally cause chaos among your mucus membranes everywhere in your body which is why women become very congested and/or sneeze a lot.  That could be why.  I don't know about what to take.
  • I just went thru this, my Dr told me small amounts of Benadryl when needed, and I could ask a Pharmysist what sinus and allergy meds are safe for pregnancy since there are MANY different classes of them they would know best....and fyi your congestion is likely caused by the flare of hormones, I was miserable, but it passed after about a week or so
  • I used the neti pot when I was pregnant with DS. It works great to "clean out" your nasal passage and relieve pressure. I was afraid to try it at first, but it is no big deal and so worth it.
  • Sorry, I just noticed you tried the neti pot. I actually use a bottle that you sqeeze in your nostral. I wonder if that would give you more pressure??
  • I recommend a humidifier in the bedroom.  It helps me out a lot overnight so I can sleep.

  • Breathe Right strips might help while you sleep, too.

  • I was really congested too for a while and it was causing awful headaches. My doctor just told me to get a saline decongestant spray. I used it in the shower (so it was slightly steamy), and it worked really well. I was pretty much decongested within 2 days.
  • Humidifier (warm steam) in room

    Hot showers

Saline spray every couple hours till you get the snot broke up, then use neti pot
