I need to know if I'm over reacting. Caleb has had diarrhea 75% of his daily poops for almost 2 weeks. When he wasn't having diarrhea, it was this soft, mushy, oatmeal/cottage cheese consistency. It always had a component of undigested food and it smells nasty. All his cultures came back negative and the pedi said it was post viral diarrhea and should be better within the week. Since this past Friday he has been having either type of poop after every meal, within a few minutes of getting up from the table in addition to waking up with poop in his diaper. He also complains of a stomach ache right before pooping. For the last 2 days we have gone dairy and whole wheat free (just doing "white" wheats) per the recommendation of my cousin who is a nurse practitioner. The diarrhea stopped but he was still having the oatmeal type poop after ever meal. The only constant at every meal is soy milk, which he has been drinking 3x a day since he turned 1. Today we added the soy milk to the list of restricted foods and he only pooped once, after breakfast, but it was still the oatmeal consistency. We are going to start adding foods back in this weekend. My question is....I feel like the consistency of his poop should be more solid in nature. Am I wrong? Am I over reacting? What should I look for as I add the foods back in? I feel like a big hypochondriac cause I've been calling the nurse line at the pedi so much for this. But if it is really something that needs more attention, than I want to be vocal. Thoughts? Advice? TIA!
Re: can we talk about toddler poop? TMI...
I don't think you're over reacting. Whatever the consistency of the poop, the fact that it's different from his norm and has continued for so long would have me concerned as well.
Noah had diarrhea for probably 2 weeks or more. One day he went 15 times. We thought it was a milk allergy because it started right when we switched to cow's milk, but it ended up being a virus. They told us to do the BRAT diet until it returned to normal. Hope he feels better soon!
I am so glad to hear this! Not glad that you all are dealing with it too, but it makes me feel better. I felt like I was going crazy and my life revolved around poo!! It doesn't help that my mom, who babysits 3 days a week, is a worse hypochondriac that I am. DS has been acting fine otherwise too. I'm still going to add the foods back slowly, but I feel like I can be a little less uptight about it. Ever since the unexplained hives he had at age 1, I feel like I walk on eggshells sometimes, wondering if a food allergy will turn up.

DS did the same thing and it was NASTY poop but our pedi said just a virus. Everything else was fine other than lots of poopy diapers that had yucky consistencies and smells, LOL! He is still having a few but have decreased and it has been over 2 weeks. I am sure that is all it is but I can understand you wondering!!
