Has anyone had ovarian cysts? Come in, please...

I went in for an u/s at my last yearly (early August) to check IUD placement. It was fine, but they found a large cyst on my ovary. I thought it was nothing, but then I got a phone call yesterday saying that I had never made a follow-up appointment, and I needed to come in ASAP to discuss it. Now I'm kind of freaking out. I thought tons of people had them with no problems? I'm worried about why they are so adamant about bringing me in. Any thoughts? Do they cause problems that need to be taken care of?

    because when they burst they hurt like a mother! My cousin has to get hers drilled when she gets them (I think that's what they do)

     I have PCOS, but mine usually dissolve on their own, never get big. I have no idea what size the one that burst was though. It was too late.

    If they get too large they can burst and, trust me, you do not want that to happen.  I had one and walked around for three days in excruciating pain.  I had no idea what was wrong and just kept ignoring it because I'm an idiot.  It was so painful I ended up in the ER and had emergency surgery to remove the cyst.  If a cyst bursts it can do permanent damage to your ovary. 

    They probably want to monitor it to make sure it starts decreasing in size, which most do over time.  If it's too large, they may schedule surgery.  I was back to work after three days off.  It wasn't that bad post-surgery.  The pain beforehand was just awful.  Make sure you make an appointment.

    teacherjess: I'm sorry to hear about the discovery of a cyst. I hope that everything is ok!

    Also, wanted to let you know that Dr. P's office policy is to discuss any type of test results in person with their patients. They are adamant about not discussing any details over the phone. I remember you saying that you had recently switched to them, so I bet that's why they want you to come back in. Also, be reassured that Dr. P is extremely thorough and overly cautious (in a very good way!), so I'm sure he just wants to discuss options with you.

    I actually just had one and it ruptured on Friday.  I ended up in emergency surgery with extensive internal bleeding and also found out at the same time I had an ectopic pregnancy. I didn't even know I was pregnant.  I was in horrific pain after the rupture and spent the weekend in the hospital.  The ruptured cyst actually split my ovary in half, luckily the doctors were able to sew my ovary back together and save it.  I would definitely make an appointment and ensure it it is monitored.

    I currently have one that is large that they are doing an u/s again on on Tuesday b/c it is now causing me some pain.  They are going to surgically remove it most likely if it is still there (which they think it is since I am in pain).  He doesn't want it to burst but I have had it for a while and it has not changed  which is good.  It is probably okay!  I don't want to worry you, but it could possibly be cancerous but MOST are benign according to my OB so don't freak out!  It is normal to have cysts on your ovary.  My dr has kept an eye on mine since i was 7weeks pregnant with DD so we have just been watching it until now and he wants to do surgery if it is still there.  good luck and I am sure it will all be okay!!!  
    Our kids are 19mths apart and we LOVE it!!

    Thanks. This makes me feel better. I'm hoping they just want to monitor it and make sure it's not growing or anything, but I always get worried...
