Winter Coats?

Is anyone going to get one? Like, a maternity coat?

I'm not really sure what to do here. When I was pg the last two times I had a smaller belly in the Winter (In Japan, it didn't get cold til the week my son was born- it was HOT even in November!!) and with my daughter, I was only 3-6 months with the winter times. This time, I'm going to be heavily pregnant and need a coat, but I'm not sure if I want to put out the money for just one winter! This is my last pregnancy, so the coat won't get any more use from me after this winter.

Maybe you girls can help me decide. Should I suck it up and buy a maternity coat, which I'll need, and try to sell it later, or try to use my regular jacket and let my belly hang out and freeze? What are you ladies going to do?

Re: Winter Coats?

  • I have to get a maternity winter coat! Not an option for me being in Alberta, Canada. ?I saw some nice looking ones at Motherhood Maternity (online) but I might try to look for second hand ones first because I would need it for such a short time.

  • No, normally in the winter i wear a Northface Fleece so I just plan on wearing it while I am pregnant too..NJ winters can either be really cold or warm and I think this year its going to be another warm one

  • Maybe look at Goodwill or a maternity consignment store.  You will be kicking yourself if you need a coat and didn't get one!  A friend, who had winter babies, has loaned me hers...

OR you could just layer, but that would annoy me when I have a big belly to deal with!

  • I'm going to try to find one used.  I know I'll need one, we spend so much time walking outside in NYC - waiting for the bus or walking to the subway or just going to the grocery store!

A friend tried to convince me that I could make it through with just letting the belly hang out of my regular coat...until I reminded her that she lives in the burbs and goes from house to car to another building.  I'd be tempted to try and make it without if I knew I didn't have to be outside so much!

  • I have an old winter coat that it about 2 sizes too big, so fingers crossed I will be able to wear that throughout the winter.

I have camel coat that is also too big, plus I bought this today (30% off and free shipping). If I love it, I'll probably change the buttons to make it cuter. I think it's just OK right now, but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised!

  • I need to find one, and everything I've seen online or in-store so far have just been fall appropriate (after all, it is just August...)  But I'm in Minnesota, so as my BIL said when he thought about my due date "yeah, you can't half-@$$ that one..."  So true.  Must find a maternity coat with Thinsulate somehow.  I'll look for used, but I feel like I'll probably have to buy new.

  • I live in San Diego, but this whole summer has been oddly cool (some morning in June, July, and this month we've been leaving the house in sweaters!!) so the winter is expected to be colder than it was last year. We love going places, we're always having family/church outings at the beach and whatnot so it is important for me to have a jacket. I'm fine with layering, but when you go inside a building you find yourself steaming hot. So, I'd prefer a nice sweater under a jacket.

I didn't even think of looking at a thrift shop, I haven't been in one in ages. I hope I can find one, but if I haven't by the end of October when it really starts getting cooler I'll probably just suck it up and buy one.

  • A friend of mine got a down puffy jacket from walmart for @ $30 when she was pg.  They carry sizes up to 3x so she just bought it very big and it worked.  I plan on doing the same.   I don't want to spend $100 on a jacket and I have big breasts so have a hard time with some jackets anyway, they fit everywhere but the buttons up top can be tough- I can't imagine maternity ones

  • What about those regular trench winter coat that folds across and you tie with a knot? (Dont know how to explain it, kinda like a wrap dress). I think those should be able to cover the belly, and you can still use it after your pregnancy.

  • My coat is pretty big, so I'm going to take my chances with my belly hanging out and freezing!  I *think* I might be able to zip it over a belly though.  Even if I kenw it wouldn't fit, I wouldn't buy one just for one winter...  but I'm thrifty!
  • I bought a really cute maternity coat by accident at the Goodwill a year or two ago. I used it as my bar jacket for nights out ;) But now I can actually use it for real now! It was only $8 and it's Liz Lange. Definitely check out Goodwill or even eBay for a used one?

My GF had a very cute wool one like this she had borrowed while she was preggers. It fell to her waist so it wasn't overwhelming, and she still looked "put together" when she went out for dinners/ hanging out and whatnot. I'm looking for something similar now!

  • I ordered one from ebay last week. Just got it this week and it's super cute! It was last years style from gap and is a longer pea coat. I only paid $65 for it, which I don't think is too bad. If I need something warmer and more durable I'll probably borrow my mom's North Face winter coat, she hardly ever wears it and it's at least a size bigger than mine.

  • I LOVE coats and I live in upper MN, so yes, I will be getting a coat.  Not sure what, though.  I may try to buy used somewhere to save money.  We are rather limited on maternity shops/departments here, so other than Target and maybe Motherhood Maternity, my selection will be pretty limited.  I may splurge on something online.
