Thoughts? At first I was thinking disposable, but after doing some research I am leaning towards cloth Anyone have experience using cloth?

Re: cloth diapers vs. disposables

  • We're going to give cloth a go this time around. Party!!! It really is cheaper in the long run, especially if you buy off Ebay. We're buying some AIO's as testers to see how we like them, and then if we like we'll buy more and if not we'll start using disposables. I can't begin to tell you how much we put out on diapers. If you add it up, it's something like $15-19 a pack twice a month for almost 4 yrs. (This is DS's and DD's diapers combined!) Cloths are MUCH cheaper in the long run! And not filling our landfills with silicone, which takes forever to break down if at all. Once you're used to cloths, it's not more difficult than disposies.

  • we use disposables-  I know there are a ton of women on here who are great and do cloth- it wasn't for me.

  • I have heard it is cheaper in the long run too. I think I am going to use disposables at first. Some of the diapers I have found are pretty pricey, and they are only little for so long. Then I was going to try out the 8-35lb cloth ones. DH said give it a try and see how it goes before stocking up. I heard the ones with the snaps last longer than the Velcro.

  • What brand did you try? What did you not like about it?

  • I don't have any experience yet but we are doing cloth. There were a few reasons we decided on this route: 1. fewer chemicals against baby's skin, 2. no diapers in the landfills, and 3. less expensive. I'm figuring since I have no diapering experience I might as well use cloth! :)

  • I considered cloth.  There's a diaper service I looked into where you rent the diapers and once a week they come to pick up used and give you new.  But I do not want to carry dirty diapers around while out.

I thought of this and may use both, Mainly use cloth but if we are out or away from home use disposables.

I am going to be using cloth diapers for the same reasons. Two brands that I am leaning toward right now are gDiapers and Bum Genius.
  • We use cloth with DD, and will with DD #2 also. We used BG aio, xtra small when she was a newborn. Now we use BG 3.0. I did have them transferred to snaps, and I think that will make sure they last through #2.

We love them! It's not a huge deal to take them out. I just have a travel size wetbag I keep in my diaper bag. Or a Kroger bag. No biggie.

Let me know if you have questions!

  • we use disposables, but that was because we didn;t have the money to front for clothe and my uncle gave us like 2 case sof diapers right off the bat so we didn't have to buy any for a few months. Plus MH probably wouldn;t go for it since he would see it as soo much more work to do. With a second child he would probably be more for it. I do have a Pampers hybrid cloth diaper that has a cloth outer shell and a regular disposable insert, but the elastic on the legs is not as good as disposables. Its suppose to cut your waste in half.

  • I did  cloth for our first daughter and planning on sticking with it for this one too.  Loved it!  I prefer the chinese prefolds and a cover.  You just fold it in thirds and place it in the cover and snap it on.  Easy peasy.  The AIO's are easy, but expensive.

When I first decided to go cloth I tried out a couple different ones to find out what I liked the best.  Also, different shaped children need different ones.  My daughter was chunky so she moved up from newborn to infant pretty quickly.  She stayed in that size for a long time and then I kept adding more covers as I found out which ones fit her the best.

Most companies online do a sample pack or a starter kit which are a great way to get the most for your money.  You will also need a laundry basket that has a vinyl liner that you will wash and I just did a load of diapers every other day or every 3rd day and I was all set.  So much cheaper and better for baby and the landfills.

When I would go out I had a travel vinyl bag that I kept in my diaper bag.  The dirty diapers would go in there and I would bring them home.  No problem.

Also, my daughter never had a diaper rash or a blowout!  All my friends that used disposable diapers were always complaining about blowouts!  yuck!

  • I was going to give cloth a try because it's all the rage with a lot of mommy friends I have. But, MH is completely disgusted by the thought and since he will be changing about half of them I have decided just to stick with disposable. It does seem like a lot of effort too, so good for you girls that are doing it!! ;)

  • I want to use cloth and have friends and relatives that have had great success with cloth.  There are stores around here that have a Cloth Diaper 101 class that goes through all the different kinds of cloth diapers and the benefits.  However, my DH said no way he was going to wash dirty diapers in the same washing machine that washes his clothes!  I am still trying to work on him with this.  Only time will tell what we do I guess.

My husband was the same way.  But when I explained to him that the diapers are washed off in the toilet and that all the yuck doesn't go thru the washing machine he got over it.  Your husband probably thinks that all of that stuff goes in the washing machine.

I have a sprayer that fits onto the toilet that I just sprayed off the diaper and then it was cleaned off.  Also, it keeps that diaper pale from smelling.  I bought it from the same online store I got my diapers.

  • We're planning to use cloth as much as possible, and H is totally on board with it. That said, I won't hesitate to use disposables when they just work better - while traveling or overnight, for example.

But man oh man - buying CDs is so totally addictive. I'm picking up a few different kinds now and I had no idea how into it I'd get!
