Trying to Get Pregnant

How much do your PNVs cost?

Hey, I went to pick up prenatal vitamins today (I know, I should have started months ago) and I went to the place I normally get my groceries - Earth Fare, which is sort of like Whole Foods. I couldn't believe the range of prices for prenatal vitamins! The first ones I saw were $30 for 24 pills. There were also some for $13 for 24 pills, and the ones I got were the store brand for $5. The most expensive ones were organic and vegan, so I'm guessing that's why they were so expensive. I'm not vegan, so I'm not worried about that, and I would prefer organic, but I'm not going to spend 6x the cost to get it.

I'm figuring I'll stick with this store brand, but is there any reason I should be spending more on these? The only thing I knew to check for was folic acid, and all had similar amounts. This one has 800 mcg.

Re: How much do your PNVs cost?

  • I have been taking prenatals for years and I always get either Nature Made or Target brand, nothing fancy. I am currently taking Target brand ones which came in a bottle of 200 and I am like 99% positive they weren't more than $20. I just checked the website and they sell the Nature Made ones for $20 and there are 250 in the bottle.

As far as what is in them and why you should be spending more, I'm not sure honestly. Mine have Vitamins A, C, D, E, B6, and B12, as well as Thiamin, Niacin, Folic Acid, Calcium, Iron, and Zinc. I have noticed that different brands have different amounts of each ingredient so you could compare them that way, I have always gone with the one that has more of each. My Target brand ones have 800mcg of Folic Acid as well.

I get the Target Up & Up brand. I think it's between $4 and $6 for a 3-month supply. When I get pregnant I'll add a DHA tablet.

  • I buy CVS brand - $20 for 300.  My OB/GYN said they were fine.

  • I have been taking Nature Made w/ DHA from Ralphs and they are $19.99 for 30, but a lot of times they have sales where they're buy one get one free.

But yesterday I found prenatals at Trader Joes--$11.99 for 60, and you only have to take 1 a day (same as Nature Made)!  They are vegan, but it doesn't say that they are organic.  And they don't have DHA, but the price is great!

These are the same ones I use and they only cost $8. This is the best deal I have found.

  • I take the generic version of One-A-Day Prenatals (which is ironic since it's actually 2 pills a day - one regular and one fish oil for DHA).

They are about $13 for a 30 day supply, but I have been able to find them as BOGO at Jewel pretty frequently. In fact, I think I've always been able to get them as BOGO, so it's about $6.50 per month.

  • Well I thought mine were inexpensive but apparently they are not! I use one-a-days and there are 45 in a bottle (one bottle of PNVs and one of DHA so 90 total) and they are about $20 a month! I did stock up though because they were one sale one week buy 1 get 1 for a penny. but I think after I run out of my 8 or so bottles I am going to switch to something cheaper.

  • I use target brand, nice and cheap and my OB said that almost all prenatals are the same!
