a Mommy by any other name...

I always thought I'd be called Mommy (since that's what I called my mother), but in Australia they use Mum and Mummy about 99% of the time...and between you and me, I hate it. To me, mummy = something dead in Egypt. Stick out tongue

So I'm going with Mama, although it's been a bit of a challenge to get people to refer to me that way - even Ben, since he grew up with Mum/Mummy (I haven't even tried to convert MIL, since I know I'd get into a "Mum was good enough for me!" battle).

Re: a Mommy by any other name...

  • Well, I voted 'Mom/mommy' because Maya pronounces a lot of things the way Josh does lol!

Strange isn't it, considering the fact that we live in Australia, she chooses to pick up Josh's way of pronouncing things.

However, she has sung out "Mummmmy!" now and then, when she is running to me in excitement or running away from me in horror (when I approach bearing vegetables or such).

How funny! I wouldn't have expected her to pick up his accent when she's surrounded by Aussies! That's really cute though. Big Smile

  • Technically, I am not called anything yet, but I called my mom Mama so I am sure that is what we will teach the baby to call me!

  • I voted for "other" because I want to be called "Mommy" but I teach him "mama" because it's easier to say. Eventually, both are good with me, so I couldn't vote for just one or the other. I grew up calling my mom "mama".

  • I don't have kids and I hope you ladies don't mind me joining your conversations here on the Bump, the knot isn't the same anymore since you all got keiki's now.  But growing up in Hawaii and still living here you hear all different names for Mom even the not so good ones :)  But I think even though you live in another country, unless you totally are anti-american, then Mom or Mommy would still be appropriate, that's what you grew up with.  and as long as your boys don't call the MIL Mum or Mummy.  Just because you don't live in america, you are still american and so are your boys and calling you Mom or Mommy is part of their american heritage as well.

Oh it's not that it's inappropriate - just that Mom and Mum are so close sounding that I think it will be a lot less confusing for them if I just go with Mama. Plus I just like it and think it's cute. Smile

  • like inamra, i teach her mama b/c that's easier to say and that's what she calls me now but when she gets older i want her to call me mom/mommy or to use the vietnamese word for mom :)
