what's your setup?
DD has been loving train tables lately and we want to get her some type of set for Christmas, but I'm hesitant to dedicate the space and money for a big train table.
So, do you keep your pieces out all the time on a coffee table...put them away at the end of the day...
Also, wondering if I should get the basic tracks from Ikea or splurge on some type of Thomas set w/ buildings/components, etc.
We do have a few engines and cars - I would probably get a couple more as well - any recs?
Re: If you have a train set without a train table...
we have one of those toy storage units with the bins on shelves. so one bin holds all of the train stuff. dc can pull it out, set it up on the floor or the coffee table. and put it away when they're done. for a time we were putting the pieces in a zipper closed bag and storing it in a cabinet.
just make putting it away as a part of playing with it.
we do this too. DD usually sets up her train on the table, the ottoman, or a flat piece of flat plywood in the living room. Then when she is done it goes back into a bin.
We have this train set but I know Brio is highly reccommend too.

Thanks, guys! We do a similar toy storage for most of her stuff - basically, open baskets on shelves; larger ones on the floor for larger toys.
I am leaning away from an actual train table per se and it sounds like you all have no problem w/ the cleanup/re-set up process.
Melissa and Doug has a nice starter set I'm seeing; and I like the one kada626 mentioned too....
I know it's early to be thinking about Christmas, but I LOVE toys!!!LOL
My dh says I have a sickness. I'm obsessed with toys. We do really like the one I posted. It even has little cars that come with it. I went to tru to buy a starter train set & I was suprise to find a "girly" one.
We do have a train table, but I just wanted to mention that we have KidKraft and Target train pieces and I'm perfectly happy with those. The Thomas stuff is expensive and I've never seen the need for it, esp. since my DD doesn't know who Thomas is.
