I work at a law firm and am Asst Manager in my Dept. The head of our company called me in for a meeting b/c I am doing my MBA online and he wanted to know what courses I am taking. Basically, they have decided that in a few years, they want me to take over for my Dept Head. This is an amazing opportunity and the pay will be outrageous. The problem is, I seriously detest my job. I am good at what I do and I know they value me but I just don't see myself doing this for the rest of my life. I guess what I'm asking advice on is whether I should continue on and in a couple of years if the promotion does go through just give it a chance. Or should I do what I want and start my own business from home (and hopefully it will grow so eventually I can quit my job)?
I'm miserable at my job and I have been for a while now but I can't quit because I bring home the majority of the money and there's no way we can manage without my salary. The more I think about the opportunity, the more frustrated I get because I want to do what's best for my family, but I want to be happy in my job as well.
Vent over. Thanks.
Re: What do you think?
Ditto PP. Waiting for that promotion doesn't preclude you from starting your own business on the side. In fact, since they value you so highly, you probably could get away with devoting some time to your own business, and if/when that starts becoming profitable, then you can think about leaving your job. Most new businesses fail in the first year, so if it were me, I'd make sure I had something profitable before quitting my day job.
Another option: are there any other jobs you would enjoy more that would utilize your existing background and pay comparably? Is it worth looking around? Is it the company you're not happy with, or is it the career path as a whole? Maybe look around for something else in the meantime if you're not happy there. But keep going in the meantime, why pull the plug if you don't have better options?
Ditto here too. I'd just thank them for the opportunity, say that you don't know what the next few years will bring, enjoy the praise, and just keep trucking away at that MBA. Good luck, I hope it all works out how you want it too.
Honestly, it's the career path on a whole. I was with this company before I did my BS and the agreement was that I would do marketing when I finished. A few months after I finished, the company merged and those plans got flushed so I was back to doing admin work. They have recently hired a marketing person and didn't even consider me for the post, even though I expressed that I still wanted to do marketing.
*sigh*
I think you're right though. I can't leave a sure thing in hopes that my little business will be successful. I'll get it going and see what happens...
