Drug copays?

I always go to Costco to get any prescription meds, but I was thinking today that since we have insurance it may be the same price (copay) for prescription meds regardless of where I buy the medicines. Am I correct?

I rather go to the CVS a couple of blocks from my house if my out-of-pocket cost is the same, but I just don't know if this is the case.

Where do you buy your prescription medications?

Thanks!

Re: Drug copays?

  • They are not all the same. You can call and ask about your specific drugs. I think a lot of them have a list of meds that are always $4 or $6 or something like that. DH's blood pressure meds are $9 at CVS and $4 at Target.

  • You can also ask your pharmacy to match another's price. I told Kroger I was going to start getting my FIL's medication filled at WalMart unless they could match it and they happily did.
  • It should be the same if you have insurance.  It's whatever your prescription co pay is.  Like mine is 10/20/35  (10 for generic, 25 for brand that doesn't have generic available, and $35 for brand when there's generic available).  Most insurance have a very similar co pay format.  So whatever you go, that should be your co pay (or sometimes less...never/rarely more)

This is true if you have more expensive drugs or low copays. If your copays are higher and your drugs cost less than those copays, then price shopping makes sense.
