Poop up the back. Repeatedly. Help.

So I have my daughter wearing pampers size 2 (she's currently 13lbs4oz, 25 in long).   When I'm bf'g her, she often poops.  And it goes up her back.  What the heezy can I do differently?  We already pull the tabs tights (they actually cross each other).

Huggies didn't work for us.  And I have a ton of pampers so I'm hoping to just modify what I'm doing with these.

 Any suggestions?

Re: Poop up the back. Repeatedly. Help.

  • Prop her up more vertically? DD's only goes up the back when she's lying down so that's all I can think of.

  • unfortunately its common with sposies.
  • It will take a little extra time with each diaper change, but try folding the back of the diaper down a little to create a bit of a "pocket."  It might not hold it in very long, but hopefully it will keep the poop from coming out the back long enough to give you an opportunity to do another change.

    Hope that helps!

I agree totally! I swear by my cloth diapers that they can hold in the Niagara Falls!

  • Honestly... try a different brand.  We had that ALL the time in the beginning.  After buying small packs of just about every diaper on the market, we finally settled on Target diapers and have not had a problem since.

Every baby is shaped a little differently, and the diapers fit them differently.  I also found that Jackson never made it to the top part of the weight limit on diapers.  For instance... he is now just under 24lbs and is in a size 5 which starts at 27 lbs.... because he was blowing out his size 4s.

  • Have you tried size one diapers? Sounds to me like the diaper might be a tad big if the tabs are crossing?

  • do u notice it more when she is laying down, in a swing or a bouncer.  It's just the way she is laying and BF poop seems to be more wet andcan travel more Stick out tongue than FF poop.

  • I agree with PP about trying different brands of diapers. We had major blowouts side and back in Target Up & Up diapers, even though they get rave reviews. Pampers we had leaks and rash. Huggies are the only brand that work for us. In the meantime, def try tucking the back in as a PP suggested.
  • You need a bigger size.

  • Hold up your diapers to the light.  Pampers dry-max redesigned to have less pulp, and the result is that there is NOTHING filling the entire back of the diaper.  You can clearly see it.  I don't know if they changed swaddlers too, but I would bet on it.  The result for everybody has been poop up the back.

  • For those who suggested cloth.. what kind of cloth diapers are you using?

our main stash is made up of BumGenius diapers, although we also use fuzzibunz, happy heiny, and rumparooz.

  • I found that when I went up a bigger size in diapers it stopped happening
  • I'm another vote for cloth diapers.  We've used sposies for a total of about 2 or 3 weeks in ds's almost 10 months of life and have had more blowouts in those weeks than in the rest of the 10 months.

We use mostly bumgenius.  Totally love them.  When ds was under 4 months of age, we used mostly prefolds (old fashioned) and cute covers.  Now that he's a squirm, it helps to have something super easy.  There is nothing more easy than a bumgenius diaper.  Also, he wears for 12+ hrs at night and rarely, RARELY leaks.  Super duper awesome.  Even when he was on antibiotics and had bad diarrhea.

  • I saw this on on the "Hot Topics" and had to comment, as I was JUST talking about DS doing this for the first 3+ months of his life while nursing.

He was the KING of blowouts while nursing.  They were so quick and explosive that the diaper didn't even have a chance to absorb it: just shot right up his back.

I agree with PP that playing with the size, fold, and type of diaper will help.  Huggies finally cut down on a lot of his blowouts.  Also, I tried to hold my hand at the top of his diaper while he nursed if I saw signs he was working on something!

It does eventally pass, but I can't remember when.  Sorry.  Hope it is soon for you!

    This!

  • I laughed out loud when I saw the topic, my DS would ALWAYS poop up his back when he was in his exersaucer! he's just starting to end that phase. I don't know what it is. I would keep checking on him every minute to catch him the second he pooped, but it still happened. I hated huggies, I use Pamper, but I don't think there is really much to do for that. I would suggest using a cradle waterproof pad and lie it on top of your changing pad so you don't have to wash/change your changing pad cover so often!
  • i use cloth too, bumgenius pockets.  the poop cant get out because of the elastic at the back.  i don't know if any disposables have stronger elastic at the back, the few times we've used them they're pretty "flat" back there and so the poo just slides right up and out.
  • i had that happen a lot, then i switched to 7th generation diapers and its almost totally stopped.  the tabs are bigger, so maybe that's why.  just, when you're putting the diaper on, put the back part up higher than the front part and then fix the tabs downward.  that seemed to help too.

Cloth is awesome! No blowouts ever. And they're so much better for your baby than disposables.

We use mostly pockets, from a variety of brands (rumparooz, Bumgenius, fuzzi bunz, etc. etc.)

  • Get the flip day packs by bumgenius! super super affordable  (the one drawback of cloth can be the large initial investment) and you can use the cute covers from other companies if you want to be more fashionable with them (the flip covers are just single colors no patterns) I got 4 day backs at 50  bucks each and that is way enough diapers to only do laundry ever couple days. NO BLOWOUTS! they are amazing and super easy to use and clean!

  • I agree with cloth.

I didn't like the more popular versions, though -- the BumGenius and Fuzzi Buns. I found the inserts too fiddly. I liked the Bummi covers with prefolds. Just fold the prefold into a rectangle (alright, somewhere between a rectangle and trapezoid, actually,) set it on the cover with the first inch or so tucked in, and velcro as usual. They eliminate diaper rash and blowouts and you can just toss them in the washer.
