Doctor talking about inducing at 39 wks

My doctor wants to induce me at 39 weeks if I haven't went into labor yet. Has anyone's doctor also suggested this? I've consistently measured large & both me & my husband were 9lb+ babies. I don't have GD & everything else looks great. Any others out there???

Re: Doctor talking about inducing at 39 wks

  • Is it just because your baby might be big?  If so that makes very little sense to me and I'd prefer to wait it out. I'd really want to know why an induction is medically necessary before agreeing to it.

  • do they have a reason?  I would definitely say no to that unless there's a real medical reason.
  • Why?  Because they think baby is large...this makes no sense at all.

I wouldn't be induced until I was at least 41 weeks, unless it was medically necessary.

  • Are you petite? Is the doctor worried about you being able to deliver a large baby?

  • My OB hasn't implied wanting to induce me at 39 weeks.  She said that's the very earliest she would ever consider inducing someone other than for medical reasons that could potentially be dangerous to mother and/or baby.  With me, she said she would induce me at 39 weeks, just for my sake.  I have a torn disc, separated pubic bone, etc.  Nothing life-threatening to me or baby, but the pregnancy is exacerbating those injuries.  I chose not to go with that option.  Induction with DD sucked and I'm really hoping to experience labor naturally this time around.

omg your daughter is adorable!!  And I love the name Eden... that was on my list but DH vetoed it- boo :(

  • Considering I'm already 39 weeks I'd take her up on it if I were you!  Then again I'm in a great deal of pain due to severe swelling.  My blood pressure is slowly rising and I've been borderline pre-e for the past few weeks.  My due date is Monday and my Doctor will induce sometime between Monday and Wednesday if nature doesn't kick in soon.

I would think it really is a wait and see kind of thing.  I'm not against inducing though.  I know some women really want to wait it out and have the most natural birth possible.  Good luck with whatever you choose!

  • He's told me all along since I've been measuring so large that he doesn't feel comfortable letting me go past my due date. I'm 5'9" and 135 preprego weight, so I'm pretty tall and thin. I'll talk to him and see what some other options would be. My mother keeps telling me that I don't want to be induced and that's it's pretty intense.
  • Unless I was very very ready (eg: effaced, dilated a little, baby very low, etc) I would avoid an induction at 39 weeks.  I have had soooo many friends go in for unfavorable inductions and end up with LONG drawn out labors that end in a c-section.

In the vast majority of cases your baby is built to fit your body.  And in the vast majority of cases, the baby will make his or her appearance when they are ready.

I wouldn't agree to a pre-due date induction unless there was a special circumstance.  And a guess for "big baby" wouldn't be good enough.  (FWIW, when I was 34 weeks pregnant I was told on a biophysical ultrasound that my DD was 6.5 pounds.  10 days later she was born due to pPROM.  5 pounds 1 ounce.  The growth u/s was WAAAAY off).

Thank you so much! Big Smile

  • I was induced at 40 weeks with my last child and labored for 16 and half hours until I delivered.  I was not dialated, effaced or at a negative station when I was admitted. She was my third child and this was my longest labor.  Also, she was a VBAC who weighed 8 lbs. 8 ozs.

With LO I have been offered an induction at 39 weeks but after the last time unless I have started dialiating, effacing, etc. I am just going to sit tight until until my doctor says that time is up.

  • My doc mentioned the same thing to me.  They said since I am measuring large, they probably will want to induce me between 39 and 40 weeks.  My 34 week u/s had the baby measuring at 5.5 lbs which is not off the charts by any stretch of the imagination and I only take those measurements with a grain of salt anyway.

I told them "No thanks".  If there's no distress for me or the baby, then there's no reason to.  It'll probably cause distress to be induced for no reason rather than let things go naturally.

all of this. i've already told my doctor that unless there is a medical reason (high BP, pre-e, etc) that i want him to let me go 2 weeks past my DD. he completely agreed.

  • good luck with your decision. i'm also measuring large and at my growth u/s yesterday they said he's already 9 lbs. today at my appointment the doctor brought up a c-section at 39 weeks. i have no idea what to do. everything else has been normal for me too.

  • FWIW, I was over 11 lbs at birth, DH was over 10 and my MW said that we won't talk setting an induction date until my 41 week appt.

This. Inductions wind up having a higher risk of c-sections, just because they pump your body up with drugs to make you think you are going into labor doesnt mean that all the hormones in your brain are going to kick in too. I would personally take the chance on a big baby, since if something happens during delivery, they will do a c-section anyway, and there are greater chances of not needing it if you allow your body to go into labor naturally. On top of that, the estimated due date is just that, an estimate, which means that your baby could be really full term anytime two weeks before that to two weeks after. If your baby comes out before he/she is completely developed, it will be at higher risks for lung issues, including asthma and allergies, to say the least.

Dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with inducing, especially for medical reasons, but you should be aware of all the risks involved before you make a decision based on an ultrasound weight that can be off by a couple of pounds.

  • My dr offered the same thing with DD & my new dr offered with this one. But for no reason. Although, it's tempting, there is no medical reason to do so. Your dates could be off & baby just needs more time. They said DD was going to be 9+ lbs & I was almost 9lbs but at 42 weeks, she was 6lbs 15 oz. So they aren't always right on the size.
  • My doctors (OB and high risk) have said they won't let me go past my due date so they'll induce duringmy 39th week because of my age (almost 41).  Risk of still birth with moms over 40 is greater as it is, which is why I'm monitored 2x/week and the risk is even greater after your due date.  If this weren't the case, I'd wait it out rather than be induced.

  • My doctor did mention that the earliest he would induce is 39 weeks.  This was based on my petite size and a tailbone injury that hadn't healed when I got pregnant.  I expressed concern with the tailbone issue because I have two friends that split their tailbones in delivery.  He said if the baby gets too large that I run the risk of re-inury to the tailbone in labor.   Basically, if I can continue to cope with the pain I am in and want to pursue a natural delivery I can but the option of an induction is available next week.

  • mine is open to inducing me a little earlier than normal because I moved an hour away from the hospital I am delivering at and my brother was 10 1/2 pouinds and I was 9 1/2 babies also come pretty quick for women in my family but also my original due date was the 16 after one funny ultrasound she was measuring small so they moved it back 10 days but I have had 3 ultra sounds since then and she has been measuring way ahead more so then even if my due date was still the 16 they know they messed up so i also think thats why my doctor is so open to it
  • It is likely that I will be induced at 39w due to PUPPS and having hbp. I'm already 2cm and 80% though (as of 36w so possibly more) and my dr doesn't think I'll make it to 39w. That being said, I'm not against induction and I trust my dr to make the best decision for me and baby. GL to you!
  • I'm being induced Monday I'll be 39 weeks 1 day. NO it is not due to medical reasons. I'm just tired of being pregnant and I'm very uncomfortable. I'm 2cm and 100% and very soft. He said I was VERY inducable.

  • I don't know, I'd consider it.  But that's just me and I was induced with both of mine.  I was induced with DD electively and even though I was considered unfavorable (fingertip dilated, not an ounce of effacement, no contractions, not even BH, etc), I still had a vaginal delivery and it was fine.  I did have a 3rd degree tear, but that wasn't related to the induction.  So with DS, my doctor saw that he was approaching the same size as DD (7.13) and wanted to get him out so that I didn't risk tearing worse, since those were the odds.  With him, I was induced 10 days early and he was 7.15 and I only had a 2nd degree tear and it was just through scar tissue.  So I was REALLY glad that she was proactive with induction.

I am fully expecting to be induced this time around as well, due to the same reasons.  And yes, a big baby CAN be a good enough reason to be induced - if you've had a bad tear before or the doctor anticipates a bad tear/episiotomy if the baby gets any bigger, then its a good enough reason.  Trust me - I have to have reconstructive surgery when I'm done having kids because of the damage done during my first tear (21 stitches in three separate layers and I now suffer fecal incontinence.)  I would take an induction to prevent THAT from getting worse ANY DAY.

  • TeacherTiff...We have a lot in common. I have HBP and PUPPS and also teach elementary school. My Drs. have said that they probably won't let me go past my due date, so I'll most likely be induced at 39w. I hope everything goes well for you!

  • Not sure that I would consider an induction unless it was medically necessary and I was favorable.  With that being said, I was induced at 39 weeks with DS #1 and with DS #2.  With DS #1, I was in a tremendous amount of pain due to brachial plexitis (swelling of my shoulder joints), pinched nerves in each shoulder and I was favorable for induction (4cm dilated and effaced). I was also regularly contracting on my own when I went in. My OB said that I should go home and progress on my own, but I begged her to keep me.  She said that if she did and my contractions stopped, that I would essentially get induced .... which I did.  And I am very happy that I made that decision.  DS #1 was 9.1lbs and I barely pushed him out.  He had severe shoulder distocia and I had nurses on top of me pushing on my stomach to get him out.  It was very scary at the time.

With DS #2, I was favorable for induction and was induced at 39 weeks as well.  Labor was great and my delivery was very smooth.  DS #2 was a bit smaller and didn't have a problem coming out.

With #3, I will probably be induced around 39 weeks, as long as I am favorable.  If I am not favorable and they are just worried about a bigger baby, I will not get induced.

Everyone is different and you just need to make the best decision for yourself and your baby.  Good luck!

  • I was induced with DS due to Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (high blood pressure).  It was a very smooth, problem-free induction but I wouldn't be induced just to be induced.

Size of baby is not good enough because their measurements can be so off.  All during my pregnancy w/DS, I was told he was very large.  Five days before he was born, they said he was nine lbs.  He came out BARELY eight lbs.  I don't trust growth u/s anymore.
