So my friend is planning my shower for October 9th, but I had to book the space at our church because I'm a member there and she's not. They told me that the room is free but that they "appreciate donations". Any idea how much a donation should be?
I think it depends on the area that you live in... is it more rural, suburban or urban? The church that I grew up in (rural farming area) asked for donations from members to use the space- most members gave $50 for the church and another $25 to the janitor for cleaning.

It's a suburban area. She said that the people who would be cleaning and setting up would have already been there regardless (because there is another function later that evening) and that the donation was just to hold the room. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.
Also, who makes this donation? The hostess or DH and I or all three of us?? I definitely don't mind doing it. I just don't know how this works lol.
I think $50-$100 is fair. I say suggest to the hostess that maybe yall split the donation, especially if she wasn't planning on having to pay for a location.
I'd be sure to tip the people who are there to set up/clean/etc. Even if they will be there for a later event, the shower will create more work for them.
Just curious, what kind of church do you go to? In our church the church throws a shower for every families "first" baby in the church, and there is no charge. It seems odd to me that they would ask for a donation to hold the room. For our wedding we, as members, had to pay $150 and that money included paying the sound man for the extra time, but we had to set up and take down. And for showers friends of the mother do all the set-up and take down. Basically showers are free of charge.
And when I say "first" baby in the church I mean that if it's the couples first baby that they have had while attending our church, we throw a shower, regardless of whether it's the first, 3rd, 6th or whatever.

It's a Methodist Church. DH is a member, but the Army moved us 3 years ago so we haven't attended since. His parents are VERY active members in the church though so we still get away with a few things. When we got married there, we paid 200, which included a wedding coordinator for the rehearsal and the day off, the preacher, the use of sound equipment, and a vocalist. Showers are free to active members but they request donations anyway. Technically speaking, we wouldn't HAVE to donate, but we wouldn't want to make the parents look bad lol.
