Opinions? Mounting your TV

So mcgee has created a great design plan for us and we're getting ready to purchase furniture but DH keeps wavering on what media center he likes/wants. He keeps talking about wanting to mount our 46" LCD on the wall and I'm just not sure how I feel about it.

Do you have your LCD mounted with a nice media center beneath?

Pros/Cons to mounting?

Any other input?

Thx!

Re: Opinions? Mounting your TV

  • Ours is mounted over our fireplace. We have the uverse modem and cable box on a ladder shelf on an adjacent wall and photos and books and nik-naks on the upper shelves (all behind a gate so Cam doesn't kill herself). I would have preferred to mount on the wall with a media center beneath, but we didn't have the right amount of wall space/layout.
  • Loading the player...
  • we have ours on a media center. but our friends have theirs mounted. both look good. if you are going to mount, things to consider - you must put all the cables through the wall, otherwise it looks messy. and you'll need something somewhere to put the cable box, dvd player, etc that's close to the tv. also, be sure not to mount it too high!

  • The only reason we didn't mount ours is because we like to move our furniture around sometimes and I wasn't willing to commit to having the TV in a permanent spot. We have it on a higher cabinet and really like it.
  • We have a TV mounted over the fireplace in the living room.  We have a built in shelving unit to the right that houses the cable box, DVD player, stereo, etc.  We have another TV mounted on the wall in our bedroom over the dresser; the cable box & DVD player sit on our dresser.

For both TV's, the cables were run through the walls.  The installation guys took care of it all for us and it looks very clean & professional.  I like the space-saving options of having the TV on the wall...especially in our living room where we don't have enough wall space for a separate media/entertainment center.

The TV in our bedroom is mounted on a swing-arm and it works great for our bedroom.  We have a separate sitting area off to the side and DH likes that he can turn/angle the TV towards him when he's off to the side of the room.

Call A&B TV and ask for install recs.  The contract their install to 3rd party people and they are always reasonably priced & do great work.

  • We struggled with this too.  Our problem was that we had many components (cable box, receiver, PS3, Wii, Xbox), a turntable, and a large center channel speaker that had to have the proper space, proper ventilation and proper configuration.  Oh, and MY only condition: had to look nice and not like a bachelor pad setup.

DH originally wanted to go for a media console tower setup, with everything there and then just the TV mounted apart from everything else on the big, blank wall.  I would have still wanted some sort of console table underneath it though for aesthetics.  Oh and for the stupid center channel.  We ended up finding a floor model TV stand at Crate & Barrel (which DH drove all the way down to Austin from DFW to pick up because the DFW C&B wouldn't sell it apart from a "set").  We had to take a hinged door off to accommodate the center speaker but otherwise it works very well.  DH wanted to put the turntable on top of the stand and mount the TV, but not only did it not look great, it wouldn't have been a good idea to mount the TV.  He bought a super low-profile wall mount and we would have had to make holes in the wall to fit the cords plus run the power cord through the wall (NOT a good idea).  Either that or buy one of those paintable strips that covers the cords, which I wasn't 100% opposed to but didn't like the idea either.  We ended up having the TV sit on the stand like I wanted.  This was also the better choice b/c we eventually want to get a bigger/better TV (we took the TV from the master bedroom and put it in the living room for now) and didn't want to have to remount/rewire everything.

  • We have ours mounted above a low media center console thingy. The media center has the dvd player and whatever else. Our cords are in the wall. I love the way it looks on the wall and the only pro I can think of is baby not pulling down the tv on himself.

Why is it not a good idea to run power cords through the wall?

    Simplest explaination I found:

NOTE: You should not run the power cord inside a wall cavity as it is against NEC (National Electric Code) and can be a potentially dangerous situation, not to mention that you will probably void your homeowners insurance if something were to happen.

People have gotten around doing this by either having installed/installing a ?clock outlet? behind the plasma mount and getting a shorter power cord or running a wire conduit on the outside of the wall and putting the power cord through that to the wall plate. Mine is run down the outside of the wall in a raceway with the video cables on the inside of the wall.

Apparently A/V cables are low voltage so they don't fall under the NEC.

But I'm guessing a lot of people do it anyway.  I generally don't like the way mounted TVs look for some reason anyway (even if they're at the right height) so I was definitely looking for any excuse to not mount ours!

  • We mounted ours.  We have our old console under it, but if we can scrounge up the money, we would like some kids of media console that is more furniture looking--with drawers so L can't get to what's on the shelves.

We played for a long time the height to hang it at.  Personally, I hate tvs mounted over the fireplace as it is not very ergonomic.  Ours is at eye level to our couch.  I want to get one of those paintable covers for the cords eventually.

    Huh.  Interesting.

    Thanks for the info!

  • we didn't mount ours because i feel like a lot of times the tvs seem 'unbalanced' when they're hung on walls.  there is nothing grounding them visually.  Maybe it's just my preference.

I wanted furniture to put the tv on.  we have all the dvds, cable junk, etc in the bottom and it looks like a piece of furniture and makes the tv not seem like such a giant element in the room.
