So DS has been drinking water fine out of his straw cup for months now. We just recently transitioned to all milk (no formula) with his bottle. My questions is, when you try to get rid of the bottles how do you do it? I have fed DS with a bottle in his room, in a rocking chair for months, so do I feed him his sippy cup with milk there too? Or do you give them the milk with meals? I'm so confused...
Re: maybe a silly question regarding milk in a sippy
Milk in a sippy with meals and water in a sippy in between meals. I also let my kids have water in a sippy in/near their bed for thirst at bedtime or overnight.
I would just start offering a sippy of milk with all meals and once he's drinking some of it, try to stop offering the bottles. Either drop them all cold turkey or drop all but his favorite bottle (bedtime?). I honestly don't even measure how much milk my kids drink at mealtime. Some meals they drain their cup and want more and other meals they just take 3-4 sips. Milk is just one part of a whole balanced diet - they don't need a ton of it, especially if it is limiting their food intake.
I just dropped my DD's bottles on Monday. She has been drinking out of a sippy since she was 10 months old, so she was use to it. My DD gets a sippy of milk 6-8 ounces in the morning and she gets 8 ounces at her nap time and bed time. My doctor said that's a fine amount for an 18 month old. I give her water throughout the day and I don't do milk at meal times.
I was afraid of her being happy with the sippy of milk at nap time instead of her bottle. She didn't even care! I did the same thing I did with the bottle though, I warmed up the milk and fed it to her while I rocked her. I am going to do that for a while and eventually not warm the milk and not rock her, until she is just drinking a cup of cold milk and going to bed. I will continue that until she potty trains because I don't want to give her 8 ounces of fluid before she goes to sleep!
Good luck
