I'm the organizer for our MOPS Consignment sale. We're making some big changes to our sale this year that I'm really excited about, but I wanted to hear any suggestions from y'all to hopefully improve our sale even more.
Here are three changes that I'm really excited about...
(1) more sale hours
(2) organizing our shoes into his & hers baskets by size (they were a big jumbled mess before)
(3) toy testing station (we're going to have a variety of batteries so you can test a toy out before you leave in case it doesn't have working batteries)
So give me your suggestions...
1. What are the qualities you look for & like most at a consignment sale (as both a shopper and/or consignor)?
2. What are some things you do NOT like at a consignment sale (again, as both a shopper and/or consignor)?
3. Any other thoughts, suggestions, whatever would be appreciated!
Re: Consignment Sale Poll (suggestions needed)
1) Easy layout, making sure clothes are in season, not stained etc, quick checkout (easy process too)
2) Junky stuff, messy aisles, hard to navigate (walking, or getting strollers through)
3) I think the KidsEverywhere Sale in Morrisville requires all toys to have batteries. I like the idea of a battery testing station, but can see if being a big ol mess too. What if people take batteries? If the sale is really busy will you have enough space? What about screwdrivers? Sellers can buy a few packs of $1 batteries and do it themselves and it may be easier for all involved.
* I'd make it a requirement that all toys be functioning with batteries or whatnot on the table. Making buyers test will likely reduce sales.
* Most important is having everything well-organized (like you're describing with the shoes) and labeled big and clear! I'd make sure there are people walking around resorting anything that may have been put back in the wrong place.
* Make the rules clear upfront to sellers about the condition things need to be in, and stick to it.
* Advertise well!
Good luck! Hopefully I'll be around!

1. What are the qualities you look for & like most at a consignment sale (as both a shopper and/or consignor)? Good selection & well organized. Quality items without stains and holes. Quick checkout.
2. What are some things you do NOT like at a consignment sale (again, as both a shopper and/or consignor)? Long waits to check out, clothing racks so full you can't see what is on them. Items in poor condition.
3. Any other thoughts, suggestions, whatever would be appreciated!
I agree with Becki that the battery testing is a good idea in theory but could get chaotic. It may be easier to require items have the batteries already in them or they won't be sold. I have gotten burned buying items that didn't work when I put batteries in them and it is really annoying so now I won't buy anything that doesn't already have the batteries in it. GL with the sale!
1. What are the qualities you look for & like most at a consignment sale (as both a shopper and/or consignor)? Good selection of like new clothing, organized checkout
2. What are some things you do NOT like at a consignment sale (again, as both a shopper and/or consignor)? Items that have obviously not been pre-screened for age (I swear I see so much stuff from like the early '90s), or cleanliess/stains. Some shoes I've seen are incredibly filthy. I think it should be someone's job to actually screen stuff that comes in. I know some of the bigger sales say they have "very high standards," but it clear the stuff isn't pre-screened.

I agree that batteries should be required for EVERY item. The battery station is a decent solution, but I think the potential chaos could be avoided by requiring that all toys have batteries in them. you can get a pack of batteries at the Dollar Tree--that shouldn't be too much to ask. As far as shoes go, i hate when they're just thrown together in a big bin. I prefer that they're on a shoe shelf like you'd see in a store, or hung on a pegboard or wall..
GL!
