Opinions on St. Agnes vs. AAMC?

I live in Columbia and I'm trying to weigh my options for the future.  I'm not sure if I want to stay with my current practice that delivers at St. Agnes, or switch to a new practice that delivers at AAMC.  I've heard different things about both.  Most of the people I know who have babies just happened to deliver at AAMC.  I don't know nearly as much about St. Agnes.

Thoughts?  Opinions?  Did anyone deliver at either place and love it or hate it?  I'd love to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly.  Thanks very much!

Re: Opinions on St. Agnes vs. AAMC?

  • One of my co-workers delivered at St. Agnes in February and she raved about it.

However, one of my other co-workers' sister is a doc (not an OB) with rights at St. Agnes and HCGH and doesn't like St. Agnes at all.

So there are 2 perspectives for you.  I can't really say anything about AAMC.

  • Sorry, I know nothing about St. Agnes, but I can tell you about AAMC....

I delivered there last summer and had a great experience. We took the childbirth class there first so got a tour of the hospital and what to expect, etc. When I was in labor and got admitted they gave me one of the HUGE birthing rooms (there are only a couple of them) at the corners of the building-it was so nice.  I was admitted around 6 am and had my baby around 5 pm that same day. My biggest fear was the whole "cascade of interventions" scenario because I was so scared of surgery but luckily they were really good about listening to my wishes.....let me walk around as long as i wanted before hooking me up to the IV, let me labor on the birthing ball in the room, etc. I waited until the last possible minute to get my epi because I didn't want to be stuck in bed and they were very understanding about that.

The on-call doc delivered my baby since mine was out of town, and while she told me what she wanted to do (start Pitocin etc) she let me wait on it and didn't really push anything on me. My L&D nurse was awesome. When I first started pushing, she told me he was face-up, which makes it harder to come out, and she was like "here-let's try this." She turned me on my side to push and instantly he turned around the right way. I'm so glad she knew that trick!

About two hours after he was born they moved me upstairs into the mother and baby room, which is smaller, but still has the couch for the dad to sleep on. Your baby rooms with you which I liked a lot because I did not want him shipped off to the nursery. I thought the food was pretty good. Got to take a bunch of diapers and supplies home with me. So I really have no complaints at all. I had a wonderful experience there and will deliver there again with my next. Oh-and this was important to me-they have an excellent NICU there in case anything goes wrong. Its one of the best in the state.

  • my sister is a RN at AAMC on the labor and delivery unit, and she's due in about 4 weeks with baby #2. even though i'm having my baby at the hospital I work at in Towson she'll be at AAMC having hers. She tried to get me to come there and deliver so I guess that's saying something. I also heard it's a very nice hospital. I know this isn't much help or answer your question. It's just a matter of which one you prefer over the other. Take tours of both hospitals and see which one you like better. Good Luck!
  • I can't add anything but have heard great things about both.  I will be delivering at AAMC but I live on the Eastern Shore.

  • I delivered in June at AAMC and was very happy with my experience.  I liked all of the nurses I had. My LO ended up being in the NICU for a week and I was very impressed with all of the drs and nurses in their unit.  I would recommend AAMC to anyone.
