Mrs. Duggar's Pumped Milk

HOLY SHIZZZZZ.....did anyone see how much milk she had pumped? And it was all saved in those little medela storage containers instead of bags.

For those who didn't see, Josie is lactose intolerant so Michelle is donating all the milk she has pumped the whole time......yikes!

  • I was SO ANGRY about that.  Am I crazy, or is lactose intolerance a fairly common problem?  If it weren't, I can't imagine that every Target and grocery store would bother carrying soy formula.  I was really angry that the poor baby suffered for months, with so much extra NICU time and discomfort and procedures, all because of lactose intolerance.  The difference that you could see and that they described once she was on formula was so great, but so upsetting.  The poor kid!  Shouldn't they have thought of that earlier???

  • I don't understand why she can't just cut dairy out of her diet?  DS was lactose intolerant until about 6 months, and it was discovered at about 5 weeks.  I stopped eating/drinking dairy.  I was still able to BF, and I gradually tested eating dairy again and found he had grown out of it.

Our hospital gave them to me when I was pumping for DS while he was in NICU. I'm assuming that Medela gives them to the hospital like the formula companies.

Maybe she didn't want to add cutting out dairy to her 10,000 item long daily to-do list. lol.

And if she is truly lactose intolerant, I'm assuming that's different than nursing babies just being dairy intolerant? I mean, theres lactose in ALL breast milk, right?

I thought the exact same thing.

Possibly.  I guess I really don't know, since DS' pedi always said lactose intolerant but told me to just cut out dairy from my diet.  I just assumed it was only in dairy products, but what you said makes sense!

  • DS is dairy intolerant.  He can't process any of the milk proteins.  (casein, whey, lactose)  He also couldn't take BM.  He was on the same formula as Josie.  It cost a ton and made me a happy child.  If he was a preemie, I can only imagine the complications.  He had constant diarrhea.  He would scream for hours on end from the gas and pain.  It got to the point where he didn't absorb any nutrients from any food.  He lost a ton of weight.  We switched him to the formula and he gained almost a pound in a very short amount of time.

Yes, I'm not really sure why it took so long for them to figure out she had issues with milk.  DS  had none of the "normal" symptoms (blood in stool) and our GI had it figured out in about 2 weeks.
