Breastfeeding

so...it's safe for pets to accidentally drink breastmilk, hey?

my mom was watching DD yesterday, who woke up from her nap very hungry and was waiting impatiently in the living room for her bottle of breastmilk. grandma was rushing into the room when she tripped on a cable and the bottle flew out of her hand, the nipple *POPPED* out and breastmilk spilled into a huge pool on the floor. so my mom rushed back to the kitchen, refilled the bottle and grabbed a rag to clean up the spill.
the family dog and one of the two cats decided to help her out in the meantime by lapping up the whole puddle of my milk. i'm incredibly grossed out by this, but thought it was so hilarious, i had to share :)

p.s. in case you're wondering how the pets fared, the cat immediately took the longest nap he's ever had. the dog had horrible runny #2. poor pooch :)

  • It is fine.  My dog that loves milk, wont have anything to do with my breastmilk for some reason.  She is quick to scoop up anything that gets spilt on the floor... but not my milk.
  • That's pretty funny.  After my water broke, DH and I rushed to the bathroom.  When we came back, our dog was licking the amniotic fluid.  How gross is that?

  • My dog enjoys sloppy seconds by licking up my LO's spit up if I'm holding her in the kitchen and it plops to the tile floor. I told my husband that the only person in the household who this milk has not been in yet is him! He didn't seem to mind having that title.

  • Something similar happened to me - I dropped a bag of milk that I was putting into the fridge and the dogs were all over it.  They seemed fine afterwards and always looked at the bags eagerly from then on.

  • My mil wants me to feed my dog some breastmilk daily...to help him bond with the baby...but, she's a bit looney when it comes to animals...digressing here, but she also things I'm starving my dog when I want him to eat dog food...he gained a pound during the two weeks she was here...he only weighed 6 to start!
