Can't I have a normal OB drs appt!?!

Please don't post this on facebook because I don't know how much I'm going to tell people outside of my loop of close friends/family.  I'm still trying to decide how much I'm telling the parents just because I don't want them to worry since there's no reason to worry yet.

I had my 35 week (ok 34 weeks 6 days) appointment today.  Stepped on the scale and I had gained 6 pounds in 2 weeks (WTF!).  So between that and the fact I'm in the midst of an argument with my mother (about the baby's name and whether or not she should be present at the delivery of the baby) I wasn't surprised when the nurse said my blood pressure went up.  Then I found out the number and it was 140/90.  Not good obviously.  Apparently stress affects me more easily now than before I was pregnant so I need to work on that.  But at the same time combined with the weight gain, it makes things look suspecious.  I also had the group B strep test today and the basic internal exam (no mention if I was dilated so I'm assuming I'm not which would be a good thing at this point).  Good news is that this week I'm measuring @ 35 cm = 35 weeks which also suggests that the baby's growth is good, heart beat @ 150 bpm, and he's active.  So everything's good on his end as far as we know which is a relief.

So I'm getting some screening tests done to make sure that preeclampsia isn't on the horizon even though right now the BP is the only symptom I have.  Good news is that if I do have it, I'm already at 35 weeks so to some extent they can take the baby at any time with fewer complications, which I'm trying to keep in mind.  So I'm in the middle of a 24 hour urine screen and when I take that in tomorrow I'll get the standard preeclampsia bloodwork drawn (checking for kidney function, CBC, etc) to make sure that we're not missing something.  I also start ultrasound with non-stress test starting weekly on Tuesday.  I have the first three weeks scheduled so just need to jump through those hoops.  Also I'm heading back to the doctors office at the end of this week for a blood pressure recheck to see if it's still high or if it was my stress.

I'm happy I have a doctor that's being proactive about this.  I can't help but be a little anxious about the whole thing but I'm trying to look at it as "you get to see the baby in the ultrasound every week until he's born".  Can't help but be excited about that.  I'm not thrilled by the fact that if the test isn't good I get sent to the hospital which just means I need to have my hospital bag packed before my first NST/ultrasound.  Needed to do that this week anyway.

As for the weight, this puts me at 29 pounds.  So since my clothes really aren't fitting much differently (except the belly getting bigger), my ankles are hardly swollen,  and I just stopped wearing my wedding rings last week, I'm hoping that those last 6 pounds are water weight.  Hopefully the heat will cooperate which will help some with the water retention and we'll go from there.

ETA:  I am fully aware that I have a very normal pregnancy and there are a lot of people that have complications that make what I might be facing look like child's play.  I just needed to vent a little.  I feel lucky to be where I'm at just need a bit more time for things to sink in and realize it more.

  • I'd blame the heat in a heartbeat fo any weight gain. Hang in there!

  • Like you I had high blood pressure the last month of my pregnancy.  I never did have pre-e, but I was induced at almost 39 weeks because of it.  I would suggest showing up early so you can sit and relax, and if there is a bed, ask them if you can lie down for 10 minutes on your left side to hopefully bring it down more.  When I ended up in the hospital in bed to be induced, my blood pressure was pefect.

Hopefully it goes down for you, good luck.

  • That is great that your doc is being so proactive.  Hopefully the BP increase is just due to stress, & won't cause you any further problems.  If it makes you feel any better, I gained 10 pounds in my last 3 weeks of pregnancy.  I think it was all water weight because my legs & feet were really swollen.  But, yeah, it's a little shocking to see that number go up so much in a short amount of time!  I'm sure it's mostly water--it's been so hot, & this is the point that everything starts swelling.  Try to relax & take care of yourself, mama!
  • Thanks girls!  Part of what's been odd is that my feet, ankles and hands aren't swelling that much.  I still think it's water weight (or at least part of it).  Which I'm hoping means it goes away soon after little one arrives.
  • I didn't have any swelling either.  That was another thing they kept checking for as well.  Also, headaches and any blurred vision.  My BP would also go into the 180s at one point which wasn't so good.

  • Thanks!  That's good to know.
  • I had no swelling whatsoever and I gained 42 pounds.  I was gaining weight like crazy at the end.  It sucks, but I wouldn't stress out about it.
