Trying to Get Pregnant

Anov. cycles due to PCOS, BC or low body weight?

I'm just curious if anyone has experienced this.  I was told I have PCOS based on b/w done, but I'm not yet completely convinced.  (the bloodwork was done on day 55 of my first cycle off BC, and my chart indicated that as a possible O day--dotted CH, but not sure)

I think maybe it caught the end of or beginning of a surge, and therefore might not be correct?  I'm now on cycle 3, w/ the first two prometrium ended.   My doc wants me to call after 35 days if nothing, and to start clomid after this one.  I'm on cd 33 now.  I plan to ask for CD3 bloodwork, and would like to get the results before I just take the clomid-my doc does day 3 start.

I'm just wondering if anyone who has had multiple cycles in a row as long or anovulatory and not had PCOS?  Or if anyone has experienced anov cycles because of low weight?  (I'm in the healthy range, but at the low end.  I don't think it's that, but my mom does.  Confused

I'm just trying to cover all the bases and definitely don't want to start meds if there is some other explanation.

Sorry for always asking related questions!  Any experience with any of the above would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for being awesome.

  • Hey! I feel like it's been awhile since I've seen you on here.

I'm anovulatory and I don't have PCOS. I had 3 cycles end in Provera and some others that were too short to have a chance to ovulate, yet they ended on their own.

Don't forget that before you start Clomid you should have an HSG and DH should have an SA. You probably should move on to an RE for proper monitoring as well.

  • I have long anov. cycles of 50+ days. How long is your long cycle? Also, I would ask to do b/w again, my doctor did after 3 months just to see if PCOS was still the dx. How many months have you been trying? 3 cycles seems a bit premature to me to start clomid, but then again, that shiit scares me and I am waiting as long as possible!

And if you can transfer to a RE before starting it, DO it! If not, be sure you know exactly what needs to be done to monitor it. A lot (but not all) obs pass it out like candy, without the proper monitoring. And RE is your best bet. GL!

My first one was 65 days.  Ended w/prometrium.  Second was 42, ended same.  And now at 33, w no end and the 35 day mark is fast approaching.

We're in our 5th "month", but 3 cycles.  None of which I believe were ovulatory, with the exception of a possible late O in first cycle.  I'm still skeptical.

And I completely agree about clomid.  Which is why I want to figure out other possibilities first.  My doc actually wanted me to go on it this cycle!  I said, um, no.

As for an RE, I would love to, but we have zero IF coverage, and so at this point, I'll just wait it out with my OB.  Who I like, but won't just jump in unless I feel comfortable.

And they do monitor with ultrasound and b/w for clomid.  Which I like.  They actually seem to do a bit of IF treatments, including IUI in their group.

Edited to add:  as far as an RE, I also feel like its super early, esp without an accurate CD3 bloodwork.

I just have a feeling my OB(or rather her nurse) is going to suggest the clomid for next cycle, starting on CD3.  So, am looking for alternatives and/or possibilities.

You need to have your b/w done on cd3 for them to really make sense when trying to treat you.  I'm surprised they tried to go off of cd55 Huh?

Totally agree.  I thought that was strange too.  Especially since I was right of BC, and there was no way to know where in my cycle I was.  Though I have been charting all along.

I would request a HSG, a S/A for YH and an u/s on cd3 as well. My RE tested for Testosterone too just to rule that out HTH!!

That does help.  Thank you.  I was hoping to be able to see if I could ovulate on my own, or be made to ovulate before an HSG and SA.  Maybe a dumb question, but would you still have temp spikes, and pos OPKs if you ovulate, but there is a blocked tube?

  • I agree with you. I'm also trying to avoid Clomid for as long as I can. I think that some docs throw out a PCOS diagnosis willy nilly when they don't actually know what's going on.
  • i have been ttc for 1 yr and my first cycle off bcp  (120 days) ended with provera. the second cycle almost did too, but i got my period day 57. since then my cycles have been 40-45 days long. all blood work and SA normal.

my obgyn says i do not have any signs of pcos. she felt i was taking a long time to regulate from being on the pill for 9 yrs, and also felt that i was underweight (like you i am in the healthy range but on the low end also). i gained 5lbs per her recommendation, eating more regularly and less running.  i don't really know if this has helped. i have had progesterone checked at 7dpo which confirmed ovulation. the last 3 cycles have been ovulatory for me, while my obgyn says the first few were prob not.

next step for me is the hsg in a few wks. GL to you.
