Working/Breastfeeding mama's advice please!!!!

I also posted this on the Breastfeeding board, but am looking for some good advice :)

Hoping to not make this lengthy, I have a few questions.
I am returning to work when he's 12 weeks old, so I'm hoping that the breastfeeding is very well established and he will transition from bottle to boob. however... still scared he may not. He turns 8 weeks on thurs. though.

When did you start giving bottles to help them adjust?

How many oz. were they taking daily when you went back to work?
*I know that that initially they will down bottles, and that each baby's diff. but just for the knowledge*

During an 8 hr day how many times do you excuse yourself to pump?

Did your LO transition well from boob to bottle?

What kind of bottles/nipples do you find are the best for your LO to help transition smoothly?

What type of pump are you/did you use while pumping at work to help keep up your supply?

Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions!

  • This is from my experience 4 years ago:

I started giving her bottles starting at 2 weeks old. She would have 1-2 a week to practice

twice a day for 1/2 hour, I also pumped every morning (DD would take one side and I would pump the other)

  • When did you start giving bottles to help them adjust? She has had bottles since week 2. I pumped to relieve thrush and DH likes feeding her as well. We went through several different kinds till we found one she liked.

How many oz. were they taking daily when you went back to work?
*I know that that initially they will down bottles, and that each baby's diff. but just for the knowledge* i went back this week. She takes 4oz about 7-8 times a day.

During an 8 hr day how many times do you excuse yourself to pump? im a drug rep so i pump in my car- usually once on my lunch break. but i only work bout 6 hours right now

Did your LO transition well from boob to bottle? We had no problem- like i said we started early. I nurse as soon as i get home so we have our special timw

What kind of bottles/nipples do you find are the best for your LO to help transition smoothly? We use doc browns and cheap generic walmart brand- only ones she liked

What type of pump are you/did you use while pumping at work to help keep up your supply? i use a medela swing. i started freezing milk weeks ago and have had no problems

  • When did you start giving bottles to help them adjust?  About one week before I went back to work - 8 weeks old.

How many oz. were they taking daily when you went back to work?
*I know that that initially they will down bottles, and that each baby's diff. but just for the knowledge*  4 ounces/bottle

During an 8 hr day how many times do you excuse yourself to pump?  I work 6-2:30.  I feed DS right before I leave - around 5am - and I pump at 8:30am an 12:30pm.

Did your LO transition well from boob to bottle? We didn't have any issues at all.

What kind of bottles/nipples do you find are the best for your LO to help transition smoothly?  We really like our Dr. Brown's bottles.

What type of pump are you/did you use while pumping at work to help keep up your supply? I started with a Lansinoh and hated it.  I coul barely get 4 ounces per 20 minute session.  I invested in the Avent Isis Duo - it's fabulous.  I am able to get 5-7 ounces in about 10 minutes now.

    GL and HTH!

When did you start giving bottles to help them adjust? we gave him one at 4 weeks, took it no problem, then didn't really keep it up (maybe 1 here or there) then at 8 weeks he refused the bottle completely. So now we're trying to do one everyday, but he still hates it.  so i'm a little nervous.

How many oz. were they taking daily when you went back to work?
*I know that that initially they will down bottles, and that each baby's diff. but just for the knowledge* he's literally "downing" 4oz and looking for more (he's 10 weeks)

During an 8 hr day how many times do you excuse yourself to pump? not back at work yet, so i'm not sure but my guess is i'll pump 3-4 times (i'm a teacher so i work slightly shorter days)

Did your LO transition well from boob to bottle? prefers the boob still

What kind of bottles/nipples do you find are the best for your LO to help transition smoothly? we're using tommee tippee (only one's he'll take)

What type of pump are you/did you use while pumping at work to help keep up your supply? medela freestyle

  • Just for clarity, I went back to work at 8 weeks.

When did you start giving bottles to help them adjust? Started bottles at week 2 - I had to go to the ER and make a brief appearance at a wedding.

How many oz. were they taking daily when you went back to work?
*I know that that initially they will down bottles, and that each baby's diff. but just for the knowledge* She takes 11-14 ounces in the 9 hours I'm away.

During an 8 hr day how many times do you excuse yourself to pump? 3x - 9 or 9:30, 12 or 12:30, and 3. Initially I was worried that I needed to have a bigger freezer stash so I pumped just before bed, too, but this led to me having really annoying engorgement issues overnight, so I cut that session.

Did your LO transition well from boob to bottle? She took bottles with no problem and went back to nursing with no problem.

What kind of bottles/nipples do you find are the best for your LO to help transition smoothly? She'll take anything. We've used Dr. Brown, Born Free (DH likes those best because she has to work a bit harder) and my mom uses some generic glass bottles that she got at the grocery store. We only use level 1 nipples, though.

What type of pump are you/did you use while pumping at work to help keep up your supply? I have a Lansinoh Double Electric. It's ok, but I think I'd need a better one if I didn't have an obscene oversupply.

  • Well I return to work Monday at 13 wks, but here are my answers anyway:

When did you start giving bottles to help them adjust? 2 weeks initially b/c she was slow to gain & pedi wanted us to be able to see how much she drank in that one bottle.  DH gave her a bottle once a day.  He got a bit lazy & did it maybe every 1-3 days for a while around 8 wks. Now she doesn't like bottles & begrudgingly takes one only if I am not there. How many oz. were they taking daily when you went back to work?
*I know that that initially they will down bottles, and that each baby's diff. but just for the knowledge*  She takes up to 4oz in a bottle.  Sometimes she falls asleep prior to taking that much.During an 8 hr day how many times do you excuse yourself to pump?  I am planning on 3.Did your LO transition well from boob to bottle?  Initially yes, but she started LOVING BFing at 8 wks & now she just wants the boob unless I am not home.  She won't really take a bottle from me.What kind of bottles/nipples do you find are the best for your LO to help transition smoothly? We use lifefactory glass bottles.  What type of pump are you/did you use while pumping at work to help keep up your supply? Ameda Purely Yours- love it!  It's a closed system, unlike Medela pumps.

Thanks in advance and sorry for all the questions!
