This may be stupid, but eh, Ill take my chances. If you deliver early, does colostrum still come in right after you give birth? Im able to produce something right now, but Im pretty sure its not colostrum, from what I can remember. I *think* just serum or soemthing... Not that I should be making anything spectacular right now, seeing as how Im not full term.
what do you think?
Re: Colostrum ?, and TMI a little!
I may have missed something, but did you have your LO early? If so I am pretty sure that it is colostrum. I know that mom's of LO's who are born early have to pump to give them breastmilk in the NICU so I don't see why it wouldn't be colostrum? If milk comes in then wouldn't colostrum? I had my LOs at 37 weeks and colostrum came in right away - milk came in 5 days later.
I'm not a LC so I can't give you absolute facts, just my thoughts.
GL!!
I havent had this one yet, DD#1 was almost a month early. Im just thinking about crap to prepare myself, you know, worrying about everything and anything. Ive had some PTL issues since 27wks and have been on bedrest since 20w and my doc was saying my chances of having LO earlier are pretty high.
The reason I dont *think* its colostrum...is I kinda ..um...tasted it..a little...its not exactly the nicest tasting of things. Atleast not like BM at all.

Yes. When you have your baby (whenever that may be) there are hormones released in your body that signal the production of colostrum and then milk.
No stress!
i see..thanks bunches!!
colostrum is very thick and almost yellow in color compared to BM being thinner and white/blue-ish. if i remember right, your breasts can leak colostrum/premilk during pregnancy at any time, but especially during 3rd tri. and as pp said--delivery gets your hormones going to produce regardless if LO is early.
good luck on your new LO!!
